WHAT do Bill Pullman, O-Lan Jones, nude models and a wheel of fortune have in common? Sketches of A Pulp Romance, for one thing.

One part theater, two parts storytelling and all parts music, this ever evolving series of happenings takes place in LA's very first independent silent movie theatre.

On Feb 27, Sketches of A Pulp Romance will perform its second installment, read by O-LAN-JONES, the "un-categorizable legend and on-screen waitress extraordinaire". It is produced by Possible Pictures and powered by a creative collective of musicians, actors and artist models, who perform (neighbor) John Allen's original music composition.

Skillfully marrying atmospheric music to the story of a double edge romance turned killing-spree, the score has been described a cross between Nino Rota and Tom Waits. The blending of the clarinets, and the pirouetting percussion evoke the rough edges of an italian circus while the melodies will leave you humming long after you've left the theater.

The hall of the re-discovered Besant Sacred Cinema (a favorite of Orson Wells) is spotted with just enough light for the artist crowd who gather to, yes, sketch the models, whose costumes and postures roam the disparity between our human perception and the facts, in this three-act story.

But that's not all. You could be selected at random to whisper your subject into the ear of the Poetry Girl who then composes a poem that will be sung by the chorus, on the spot.  Improvisation, chance, cross-pollination of musical genres, plus evocative modeling, so much heart and all that cool, brew up a mesmerizing experience.

Doozy opens the night dishing out their own lush and loopy brand of Prohibition Pop and Depression-era cheer. Claire Wadsworth closes the show mixing alternative and baroque pop, with the true elements of a singer-songwriter.

According to Harps of Heaven - Ideas on Art and Culture, "The September 2013 installment, was a glorious re-imagining of its illustrious provenance, Terrence Malick's Badlands. Void of any genuflecting, or sentimental piety Sketches forces us to revisit Malick's masterpiece through the grim prism of the present.  Excerpts of the original screenplay narrated by Bill Pullman - resonate with timelessness and prescience evoking both the arid nihilism of the 1970's Midwest and the end-of-empire despondency of post-9/11 America."

Thursday, February 27, 8pm at the Besant Sacred Cinema - 2560 North Beachwood Drive, Hollywood 90068
