Beachwood Canyon

Gridlock Becomes a Safety Issue

Looking south toward the Village

Most who live here are well aware of the congested streets during spring break, in the summer and on most holidays. That seems to have shifted and often it's crowded with cars and pedestrians during the week and on weekends no matter whether there is a holiday or not.

Temporary Permit Parking zones are being created now. The signs will most likely go up in 3 months. This should create some measure of relief and greater parking enforcement is assured in order to support these PPDs.

The City Council office has asked Rec and Parks to close the Hollyridge Trailhead for 180 days starting at spring break.

Once the signs have been posted and the trail head is closed, neighbors will be asked to spread the word on social media and on tourist and hiking web sites. If we do this together, the fact that there is no access to Griffith Park from Beachwood Canyon and almost zero legal parking available in the area will spread like the wildfire from a carelessly tossed cigarette butt.

The goal is to clear the roadways so that emergency vehicles can respond to calls. We are in a 100-year drought and many tourists have no concept of the impact a cigarette butt can have on our neighborhood.

This video, Visitors to the Hollywood Sign, made by a Beachwood resident, shows what most days are like up here. Post it on Facebook. Tweet it if you have a Twitter account. Ask the world to be smart when they come to Hollywood. There is a site created by the Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association that they should visit as a starting point:

TheHollywoodSign.orgwhich directs visitors to the Fern Dell entrance to Griffith Park as well as Bronson Park.

If you have a favorite hiking spot, please write to us and send photos. We will post it on this site. We are hoping to build this as a go-to guide for the average tourists and/or hikers who don't want to spend their time and money sitting in gridlock traffic only to be turned away. Visitors should be embraced and guided to areas that will give them what they want without creating a burden on any one area. Will you help build this site?

If you would like to know more about the Permit Parking process or any other aspects of the changes that are coming soon, please write to us at [email protected]

Did you know our beloved Cheremoya School will be 100 years old next year? We are starting to gear up for a massive birthday party and are looking for school alumni to make this a special 100th year!

The Cheremoya Foundation has started a Facebook page and we've just begun our outreach. If you know of any alumni, please steer them our way. Here's the Cheremoya Foundation Website at  http://cheremoyafoundation.org/

Student enrollment from our local community is on the rise and I've even heard some claims that people are moving to Beachwood to take advantage of the great education offered at Cheremoya! We just completed phase two of our makeover/renovation and the lower hallways are nearly complete bringing the school back to its former glory.

As always, I appreciate all of BCNA's help and support. I'll have more info for you as we roll this out.

Cheers!

Christine, Cheremoya Parent and Cheremoya Foundation Treasurer

One person can make a difference

Four storybook style bungalows in Beachwood Canyon are the latest addition to the Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument inventory.

Looking like the backdrop for a Grimm Fairy tale, these one-bedroom cottages  built in 1921 and 1923 have been recognized for their architectural contribution to the neighborhood and are an acknowledgement of rapidly disappearing bungalow courts.

The story behind their nomination is heartening, too. Judy Marks, a resident who has walked her rescued Boston Terriers through the streets of Beachwood for the last 23 years, fell in love with the cottages. When the city labeled them unfit for habitation in the spring of 2012, and she saw a public posting to that effect, Marks became concerned about their future. Researching them, she pulled historic permits, took photos, and began to look into "Storybook Architecture" and its roots in Hollywoodland.  Unsure if just a single individual could impact their future, Marks started the process for doing a Historic-Cultural Monument nomination. With help from the firm Historic Resource Group in Pasadena, Hollywood Heritage, and her own Masters degree from USC's Architectural Conservation program, she was able to successfully nominate the buildings for protection.

She is now volunteering her services to the owner of the property to help him obtain Federal Tax Credits for renovations and restoration done according to the Department of the Interior Standards.

Oliver - A Rescue Story

I rescued Oliver from a bus stop where he is was being kicked by one of a trio of homeless men. He is a dachshund mix approximately 7 months old. He seems to be in great health! He's friendly with people, dogs, and children. And, he's getting neutered on Friday.

He must've belonged to someone. He most certainly hadn't spent much time with those men because he was clean and his nails were freshly clipped.

If you're interested, please contact [email protected]

Thanks!
