Special Notice - Let's Make a Difference Together!
Oct 8, 2013 at 10 a.m.
200 N. Spring St. Room 340, L.A., CA 90012
Item 5 The Arts, Parks, Health, Aging and River Committee Report Recommendation for Council action, as initiated by Motion (LaBonge - Fuentes):
INSTRUCT the Department of Recreation and Parks and City Administrative Officer (CAO) to conduct a study in 60 days in regards to required Park Ranger staffing levels, including:
a. Investigating priorities for managed hiring and/or other procedures necessary for hiring more Park Rangers.
b. An analysis of the specific numbers of Park Rangers and support personnel requiredfor optimal staffing.
c. An analysis of the park system on a regional basis to determine where the greatest need for Park Rangers exists.
d. An analysis of required equipment and infrastructure to support Park Rangers.
e. Creation of a Reserve Park Ranger program.
f. Coordination with rangers from other governmental agencies.
g. An overview of the Park Ranger Program prior to reductions in numbers of Park Rangers in comparison with the current situation. Neighbors, this is a time when we should step up and show the City Council that our neighborhood is seriously in need of increased ranger presence. According to what neighborhood leaders learned at the last Arts, Parks, Health, Aging and River Committee meeting last week, we have gone from 70 rangers a few years ago down to 2 rangers for all of Griffith Park, one of the largest parks in the United States!
Let's support studies and action including funding to get our rangers back on duty. Beachwood Canyon is surrounded by Griffith Park. Hikers find themselves in distress, parking and traffic at park trail heads needs to be managed. Rangers have a long a varied list of duties and are trained in first aid, search and rescue, fire suppression, traffic control, have extensive knowledge in our local terrain and its wildlife and have gone through law enforcement basic training. They bring so much to our area that we need - but we need more of them.

We have complained long enough. It's time to take action. Maybe we'll have park rangers hired before next summer.
