Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association Fall Meeting
Monday, September 16th at 7 p.m.

BCNA logo
This has been a busy summer. BCNA has been hard at work with the other neighborhood organizations surrounding the Hollywood Sign to find solutions for handling the traffic gridlock brought about by the increase in tourism. We have also been working with leaders from all over Los Angeles and beyond to stop this Millennium Hollywood project.

This Fall we will meet at the Beachwood Cafe courtesy of owner, Patti Peck. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. The Beachwood Cafe is located at 2695 Beachwood. There are spots in the Beachwood Market parking lot and on Belden for parking.

We are anticipating Assemblymember Mike Gatto as his office requested a space on our agenda. Other topics will be local issues like a crime report from our Senior Lead Officer and a tourism update from community leaders. We are inviting Council District 4 to attend as well as West Traffic.

Your attendance is important at these meetings. We need to hear your comments and suggestions to make our discussions productive.

The Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board held its LA Tourism industry Market Outlook Forum event on Wednesday, and later that evening Tom Labonge showed up at Hollywood City Hall to hold a meeting with neighbors on tourism.

Labonge went from that forum on how wonderful tourism is for Hollywood and the huge growing numbers of hotel rooms being occupied each year by tourists only to end up standing in front of some 100 residents from the neighborhoods surrounding the Hollywood Sign who have been overwhelmed by the tourist invasion.

Labonge heard from the people. The shared conclusion was that a solution to the huge number of tourist had to found. Many suggested that the Beachwood Drive access to the park be close either temporarily or permanently and that entry be from established entrances east of Hollywoodland. The Gondola car was supported by a few. Others, including Labonge, suggested shuttle buses be provided to tourists parking in Hollywood. Most in attendance rejected those alternatives as well as red curbing Beachwood Drive and extending the DASH bus to the park entrance. His primary challenge was how to deal with the existing right of visitors to travel on our public streets to access the public Griffith Park.

The truth is that it's not a NIMBY issue - the areas that the tourists are accessing are cut off from emergency resources because of the great number of cars competing for space. Recent efforts to aid suffering and ailing tourists have been delayed because of the poor infrastructure never intended to host such traffic.

Rather than allow the back room deals of the City allies to continue to ignore the impact that tourism is having on the safety of the tourists and the neighbors, an alliance is being created amongst local neighborhood groups. We look forward to a potential partnership with the City soon! Please stay tuned.

Search and Rescue efforts like the one below happen almost daily in the area around the Hollywood Sign:

BREAKING News!

Hollywood Patch Reports: Sunday morning, August 18th at 9:56 a.m.
STRANDED Hikers Get Airlifted from Griffith Park

Paramedics and firefighters conducted and air and ground search for two hikers. They were dispatched to the scene at 9:56 a.m. Two males were rescued by helicopter and there were no reports of injuries at this time.

Tramway to the Sign

For those unfamiliar with the Tram idea, here's the information:

Chuck Welch's Plan (Lived for many years on Deronda)

The proposed Hollywood sign aerial tram would run from Travel Town to the top of Mt. Lee, skirting Forest Lawn Memorial Park. At the mountaintop, visitors would walk through a 50-foot tunnel leading to the base of the letter H. A walkway built beneath the sign would allow visitors to inspect it and admire a stunning view of Los Angeles and Hollywood.

Tramway would cost $4 million to build, but would produce that much in profits every year, according to proponent Chuck Welch.

Trams would travel about two miles each way. The Tramway is expected to draw about 1 million visitors each year to the Hollywood sign.

No Smoking in the Canyon!

Citizens for Los Angeles Wildlife, Inc. (C.L.A.W.), founded by a few of neighbors in Laurel Canyon, is a public benefit non-profit advocacy group that we created to protect and restore the environments of wildlife of Los Angeles from dwindling open spaces. Our mission is to promote, educate and protect the fundamental importance of wildlife, wildlife habitats and wildlife corridors everywhere.

We are deeply concerned about fire danger in the hillsides:  Therefore, we designed a variety of "No Smoking In The Canyon" signs that can be placed anywhere on private property.  In addition, we have been granted permission by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy to allow us to place signs on their land, as well.  The signs can be adapted to your particular neighborhood for example we can change them to say "No Smoking In The Hillsides"

Please let us know if you have property along a highly visible or high-traffic area where you might like to post a banner or sign in your neighborhood. We have also designed bumper stickers which we are printed on magnets.

All of these signs are paid for by donations.  If you'd like any signage or bumper stickers for use on your property or in your neighborhood, please visit our fire sign page on our website http://www.clawonline.org/FIRE.html

Please make sure to include your sign request and contact information along with your donation.

While our mission addresses wildlife and wildlife habitats throughout Los Angeles and California, our home is here in Laurel Canyon. We invite you to visit our website: www.clawonline.org and "Like Us" on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CitizensForLosAngelesWildlife to learn about our current and future projects.
