BCNA Annual Meeting Report
February 11, 2013 was the annual meeting of the Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association and we were grateful to have held it at the Beachwood Cafe, courtesy of owner, Patti Peck!
We met our temporary Senior Lead Officer, Nicole Montgomery (Maggie is out on medical leave). She can be reached at: 36019@lapd.lacity.org and you can leave messages on the same cell phone that Maggie used: 213-793-0710.
Sharon Shapiro from Councilmember Labonge's office shared some of the highlights of the work that the councilman has accomplished in our canyon. She shared that the Mt. Lee resurfacing and support project finished early and under budget. Also, many streets in Hollywoodland have been repaved! There are some projects that are still waiting for completion like the relocating of the stop sign on Belden at Woodshire. This work order is in the que and Sharon is keeping us in the loop. The sign needs to move in an easterly direction down hill so that the stopped vehicle can actually see if there is a vehicle stopped at Woodshire waiting to enter the intersection.
George gave details on the next steps in getting the FAA to create a flight rule for non-emergency aircraft over our Mt. Lee area.
He also shared the process that is taking place to stop the Hollywood Community Plan from becoming law. The success of the lawsuits that are in play right now will determine the future of the core of Hollywood - skyscrappers or smart development?
Also discussed was the Millennium Project. (More on that in a separate article)
Based on the discussion in this meeting, here's the Action Plan:
1) Permit Parking for upper Beachwood Canyon needs to be crafted. There is currently a hold on all such applications but Sharon will let us know as soon as this is lifted. We will be applying for a temp district which needs to be renewed each year. More on this project as it develops. Tourism is not getting less - it's actually impacting the upper Beachwood area in a new and more intense fashion. We must have relief for this and permit parking seems to be the only real solution. If you have better ideas that we can present to the city for relief now, please write to us at BeachwoodCanyon@sbcglobal.net.
2) Get attention to party houses. A couple of neighbors came to discuss a local party house. Sharon and our SLO are bringing in the detectives to take action.
3) Traffic Enforcement at Scenic/Beachwood, Beachwood/Belden/Westshire. We are asking our SLO to work with West Traffic to get a traffic officer posted at these intersections.
4) Smart Cross Walk for the Village. Sharon will process our request for a Smart Cross Walk for the cross walk across Beachwood From the Beachwood Cafe to the Westshire/Beachwood corner.
5) Handicapped access for Beachwood. BCNA has requested that curb cuts be created for all the curbs from Franklin to the Village on Beachwood. Sharon is getting updates to us on this process!
6) Stickers/posters have been applied to cable cabinets all along Beachwood. This blight needs to be addressed. Sharon suggested that we contact Sharon Ramano of the Hollywood Beautification Team to have them paint over these. We also know of a chemical that can be applied to easily scrap these off. If any of you would like to volunteer some time and elbow grease, please email us and we'll set you up with the product and George will train in its use. We may have to wait to get other remedies in place so if you're up to it and want a right now remedy, please let us know.
We adjusted out bylaws from 2-year terms to 3-year terms. And we are adding some language that candidates for board membership need to have attended at least 4 meetings as a show of commitment.
Here's our current board but our bylaws allow us to grow it as needed so feel free to jump in - attend our board meetings!

Obstacles Block Fire Trucks!
 | While fire trucks tried to pass, there was an SUV legally parked behind the white Wagoneerfurther narrowing this passage.
|
Will this kind of negligence cost lives and property in our canyon?
Yesterday, Thursday, there was a fire on the east side of Cahuenga Pass. Two responding fire engines were forced to come to a halt when faced with this porto potty creating an obstacle to their passage.
If you see such an obstacle in the public right of way, report it to the city AND to the fire department. Both agencies are responsible for the safety and well-being of the residents in our canyon. Return to top

Sign the Billboard Petition!
Please consider this:
Sign on to our petition urging the City of Los Angeles to fully implement the law and California Court of Appeal decision calling for over 100 illegal digital billboards to be taken down.
Last Tuesday, the Los Angeles City Council Planning and Land Use Committee approved a long-awaited policy addressing signs in the City of Los Angeles. Thanks to overwhelming support from grassroots neighborhood leaders, the committee did not slip language to retroactively "legalize" the over 100 illegal digital signs that the California Court of Appeal ruled must be taken down. But, don't think that this week's Committee action marks the end of our fight. The sign policy that passed committee must still be taken up by the full City Council. You can be assured that the owners of the illegal digital billboards are undeterred. Clear Channel and CBS Outdoor and their army of lobbyists continue to press the issue with the City Council. They are walking the corridors of City Hall lobbying for a "legislative workaround" to retroactively legalize these illegal billboards. Our work is far from over to ensure that the City of Los Angeles will fully implement the Summit Media LLC v. City of Los Angeles ruling and take down the over 100 illegal digital billboards. The easiest way to help is by signing the petition. The Mayor and City Council need to hear from you, their constituents, on this topic. Please continue to urge them to do the right thing. Press them to follow the law. Demand that they fully implement the Court's ruling. Tell them to take down the illegal signs! We've made communicating with our City leaders easy. Sign our online petition demanding that the illegal signs be taken down. Click here to join your neighbors in demanding action! To learn more about the Summit Media LLC v. City of Los Angeles litigation and to get information about the illegal settlement agreement and billboards, visit www.takethemdown.org Here's the URL for the petition:

Assemblyman Gatto Appointed to Commission to Keep Film and Television Jobs in California
Sacramento, CA - Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Los Angeles) has been appointed to the California Film Commission (CFC). The Film Commission enhances California's status as the leader in motion picture, television and commercial production by keeping film industry jobs and projects in the state. A one-stop office for filmmakers, the Commission supports productions of all sizes and budgets. Services include tax credits for in-state production, an extensive digital-location library, free-online permitting, low-cost use of state properties as shooting locations, and production assistance. Assemblyman Gatto, who represents the 43rd Assembly District, has a particularly strong interest in the film and television industry. His district, which includes the cities of Burbank, Glendale, and a large portion of Hollywood, is home to numerous film and television studios and post-production facilities. The district is also home to thousands of people who rely on the health of the entertainment industry for their livelihoods. "As a lawmaker who represents many of the studios, executives, creative and technical staff and talent that make up one of California's most critical industries, I am proud to join the Film Commission Board," said Gatto. "Anything I can do to create jobs and strengthen California's entertainment industry will help my constituents, my district, and our State." The Commission has 21 members appointed by the Governor, Senate Pro Tem and Speaker of the Assembly. Gatto was appointed by Speaker John Perez as the California State Assembly's representative. Board Members to the Film Commission do not receive compensation for the position. Mike Gatto is the Chairman of the Appropriations Committee of the California State Assembly. He represents the cities of Burbank, Glendale, La Canada-Flintridge, the Los Angeles neighborhoods of Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Atwater Village, and portions of the Hollywood Hills and East Hollywood. How NOT to be a Complete Jerk at the Vet's Office
This is a very interesting blog entry - please click on the link to read more:
"My parents are vets, and I know dealing with pet parents can be rough. Here's how to be a good one.
Being raised by two veterinarians made for a very warped childhood. Most of my formative years were spent gazing at the innards of cats and dogs while Mom or Dad removed, stapled, or otherwise rearranged internal organs. I used to take naps inside of kennels with the patients. I have no real concept of what polite dinner conversation is.
I always thought I would be a vet, until I worked at a vet hospital. Working at one and hanging out with your parents at one are very different things. Sometimes it is just one big kitten parade, but sometimes my mom has a Facebook status like this:
"I have seen 5 patients tonight and all 5 are now deceased. The worst night ever."
My mother has been a veterinarian longer than I have been alive (she graduated pregnant with me) and an emergency vet for over a decade, but even she has a hard time with this much death in one night.
 | Dad Vet and Granddogs
|
Things like that help remind me that I did make the right decision, career-wise.nMy parents have a lot of funny stories, too. But, they also have some stories about people just being mean. So I asked them (and all of my other vet-friends) to provide me with some helpful hints on how to not be a jerk at your local vet hospital.
Don't Lie!
I lie to my doctors all the time. I lie to my dentist about flossing, I lie to my MD about how much I drink, etc. But, I don't lie to my vet. Mostly because she is my mom and can tell if I'm lying, but also because it would suck if something happened to Angie because of something stupid I did.
If your dog ate your pot, it is really important that you tell the doctor that your dog ate your pot. THC is toxic to dogs in large doses. If your dog ate any prescription medication (legally obtained or otherwise), tell your vet. Vets are also bound by doctor-patient confidentiality, so they're not going to narc on you. They will report abuse, however, such as people drugging their pets to "see what would happen." Don't do that.
Don't lie about non-drug factors, either. If you feed your pet human food, don't say you only feed them Iams. If you haven't applied your flea prevention or heartworm prevention in a year, don't say it's been a month. Giving heartworm medication to a pet who already has heartworms can kill the pet, so it's important that a heartworm test be done if you've fallen behind on the medication.
Follow Instructions!
Medical instructions are not suggestions. They are given from a place of medical knowledge. Administer medications as directed and when directed and KEEP THE CONE OF SHAME ON. You can also use one of these great cone-of-shame alternatives. Also, if you do have to go to an emergency clinic: be sure to go to your follow-up with your regular vet!

Quote for March 2013
"If you have an important point to make, don't try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time - a tremendous whack." Winston Churchill
