Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association - November Outreach Report

Board members set up an outreach table in front of the Beachwood Market in November. Many neighbors shopping and dining in the Village stopped by to visit and share issues on their streets. Some joined for the first time and a couple took the opportunity to renew their dues. In addition, donations for the Holiday Trombone Event on Glen Green were received.

Special thanks to Missy and Nina for bringing your furry neighborhood advocates!

Thanks for all who spent so much time in very cold temperatures! Thanks, Bruce, Donna and Martin for your uplifting energy!

Plans are in motion for a January Outreach!

Breaking News - Mulholland Highway to get a double yellow stripe!

Last summer, Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association board member, Nina Van Tassell lead an effort to get the City of L.A. to paint a double yellow line down the middle of Mulholland Highway. This particular stretch, between Durand Drive and Canyon Lake Drive is viewed by tourists and others as being a one-way street. Often cars park temporarily on one side of that street while taking photos. It is assumed that this driver doesn't realize that they are occupying an entire lane by doing so. The outcome is all too often other cars swerving around the illegally parked car placing themselves in harms way. Driving on the wrong side of the street, often around a blind curve is extremely dangerous. Having this line painted by the Department of Transportation will send a message understood around the world - you get to drive on one side only!

Thanks also to the action of the DOT for the red curbing. Between the new double stripe and the red curb, we hope that behavior will change in this stretch of Mulholland Highway.

Thanks to Nina Van Tassell, Sheila Irani (Lake Hollywood) and Sharon Shapiro (City of L.A. District 4) as well as the DOT staffers who studied this roadway for the combined and successful effort toward a safer roadway!

Trombone Holiday Event on Glen Green - Success!

Photo from 2011 Event - This year was even BETTER!

There were more than 125 neighbors in attendance. Even our councilman, Tom Labonge attended with his Chief of Staff, Carolyn Ramsey and Arts & Culture Deputy, Isaac Burks.

Here's a partial list of people who deserve special recognition!

Brian Berkstrom as the trombone player who is singularly responsible for the idea of having a trombone choir perform holiday music back in 1998 and for his continued support of this event on all levels.

Bill Reichenbach for his fresh arrangements year after year, his humorous leadership and conducting prowess, keeping the audience engaged from beginning to the last amazing tune!

Bill and Tamara Pullman for their generous involvement, coordinating the many Glen Green volunteer organizers and keeping everyone on schedule with joy and energy!

Glen Green neighbors - you ROCK! These neighbors come out from the first organizing meeting to the clean up crew at the end of the Glen Green Trombone Holiday Event.

The Glen Green Goddesses for the amazing performance at halftime - singing holiday music in perfect harmony and infectious exuberance. They are Allison Brooker, Kimberly Dullaghan, Linda Fuller, Angela Gygi, Suzan Hanson, Jodi Long, Maesa, Tamara & Rosa Pullman, and Miranda Richards.

Neighbor Fabio Conte (The Fabiolus Cafe on Sunset) for the generous offering of three huge platters of hot pasta and for sending Cheri to serve it to neighbors! Fabio also donated the paper goods and some interesting ingredients for the Hollywood Orchard Naughty or Nice Hot Punch.

Thanks to Patti and Minh from the Beachwood Cafe for providing a huge and beautiful farro and beet salad.

Lupe and her Beachwood Cafe hospitality team for keeping track of all the food in the potluck area. This is their second year and their gracious nature is a perfect fit for this event!

Morrell Morton and his sidekick, James for their work pouring beverages and making this evening so very much fun!

Much love and appreciation to Kimberly Dullaghan for her work with neighbors creating a series of signs welcoming folks to the Holiday Trombone Event and the touching messages on all the signs leading away from the event! The luminaria were perfectly placed on both sides of Glen Green making reading these signs very easy.

Thanks to Dennis greeting and screening autos at the opening of Glen Green. This was the first year that no vehicle attempted to park on the south side of Glen Green - this year was the safest year EVER!

Thanks to Glen Green residents, Larry and Julie for providing the deluxe Port o potty. And to Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association for the heaters and tents. Thanks to Ray of Anytime Rentals for generously donating the huge canopy that protected the trombone players from any possible moisture.

Also, thanks to the BCNA for working in concert with our great Council Office to get this event insured and the permits in place in good time for this event.

And last but not least, thanks to our Councilmember, Tom Labonge and his staff along with Manny from Street Services for supporting and subsidizing this great annual holiday event. Without their support and assistance, this event would not take place!

If you contributed but don't see your name in this partial list, please send us that info and we'll make sure to add you to the list in the next newsletter.

Have a happy and safe holiday season!

The Board and Membership of Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association.

"Dear Friends of St. Andrew's Place Stairs,

We have some wonderful news to share from Councilman LaBonge and the Bureau of Street Lighting. The stairs will be lit by the end of this week. We are extremely happy that the entire stairway will have lights and that installation will see completion at the end of 2012 just in time for the holidays.

I am asking that you save the date of Monday, January 7th from 4-5pm to celebrate this momentous occasion. The lights will turn on at dusk which is approximately 4:30 p.m.

I will send a flyer with more information as the date gets nearer but I wanted you to mark your calendars now. Thank you for your patience throughout this long but gratifying project.

I wish you and your families a beautiful and peaceful Holiday Season and New Year.

Grady - Your New Dog!

Grady is looking for a home. He's a sweet senior lab/husky mix. Grady likes to go for his walks and have some companionship. He's really easy to care for. He's house-trained, good with kids, other dogs, and elves. He's good on a leash and does well  in a car (or sleigh). Grady's a handsome guy and doesn't ask for much. He's been bounced around between fosters, but he just settles in and finds a cozy place to nap.  Grady would love to finally find a place he knows he can spend the rest of his days.

Please help us find him a forever home and a cozy spot with a soft bed where he can get a good night's sleep! For adopting information on Grady, contact us at info@dirtydogsquad.org.

Wacky Ways to Keep Mice Away

With season changes come an influx of critters trying to weasel their way into your homes in search of food and warmth. Although Remi from Ratatouille may have us all temporarily feeling sympathetic for rodents, they're the last thing you want in your home this winter.

The best way to prevent mice from choosing your house as their nesting ground is to seal all holes and keep food out of sight. If they don't have anything to munch on, they'll keep moving on to the next home. But if you've done all that you can, and mice still seem to be finding a way into your home, some of these unusual mice repellents may keep them at bay. These methods are wacky so be sure to educate yourself on all the health warnings around these tips before you try them in your home. While we want to get rid of those little rodents, your health is always top priority! Safer is better.
