PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

Kadima is full of wonderful learning experiences for all of the students from ECEC through Middle School.  Over the next few weeks, Kol Echad will include articles from different teachers, from different divisions sharing some of the wonderful things we are doing.  You will hear everything from technology to science to math and much more.  This will give you a glimpse of what happens inside the classrooms at Kadima, a glimpse that parents often don't see.

This is our third article by Elementary Science Teacher, Jessica Rosner

Science Comes Alive at Kadima Day School

The Kadima Day School Elementary School Science Lab has been transformed in recent years.  In the past, science was taught exclusively in the classrooms.  A few years ago, a laboratory space was designated on the elementary school floor, but was a share classroom. In 2012, a full laboratory classroom space was designated on the Studio level of the main building. The science curriculum utilized is FOSS, which is a research based science program, initially developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California, Berkeley. FOSS is a hands-on, experiential based program.  Walking through the science lab, visitors will see all supplies on hand and experiments on display and in progress from all elementary grades. Content charts are hung on the wall where students can read and learn from what others have done.

As you enter the elementary school science lab, there are a variety of creatures there to greet you:

  •  The crayfish are there to snap at you and then curl up in the corner of their habitat.  They come back out again when they feel that someone might be moving them to their feeding bin where they will eat a few cat food pieces.
  • The silkworms have not hatched from their eggs yet, but the students come to check daily on them.  The mealworms have almost all transformed into adult beetles with a few still in the larvae stage. The students come to make sure that once they have entered the pupae stage they are moved to a different container where they will transform yet again. Students come to cut up apples every other day to feed the mealworms and the adults.
  • The caterpillars are still eating their sugar food, but soon will start to build their chrysalis where they will stay for around 10 days and transform into a butterfly.  Hopefully, they will mate and eggs will appear in the habitat the students have created.
  • The milkweed bugs are hatching from their orange eggs and quickly finding the sunflower seeds to eat and the water bottles the students created for them.   They too will lay eggs eventually.
  • The twenty snails are crawling in the three different habitats created by students. The students come by to hold the snails, help feed them lettuce for food and chalk to keep their shells strong, to have snail races, and the students enjoy comparing the snails to other animals in the room.

Besides the animals, there are many plants in the science room.

  • As you enter the brassica plants are in the back corner under strong lights.  They are in a special tray that holds water for them to drink. The students are constantly offering to add more water so the plants have enough food.  The students also offer to help cross pollinate the flowers by hitting the flowers into one another.  In the science lab there are no bees to do this job, so the students must do it.
  • There are straws sitting in a bucket in the back of the classroom with a single wheat stalk growing out of them.  No dirt is necessary for the wheat.
  • There are cups along the side that have grass and alfalfa plants growing.
  • Small parts of potatoes with eyes were planted in dirt and now many tall green plants are taking over their area.  In a few weeks, carrots and garlic will also be planted to see if plants can grow from no seed at all.

In addition to both the plants and the animals, the room is decorated with amazing science projects that each grade did as part of the Science Fair.  Each grade came up with their own question and developed their own course of action.  The experiments were done in the lab and in the classroom where both the science specialist and the General Studies teachers worked together hand in hand. The boards bring color and creativity to the science lab.  As part of Science Fair, student made rollercoasters, students made solar systems and volcanoes and so much more. The elementary science lab is really alive and full of amazing opportunities for students to learn. Each day, students thrive in this hands on learning environment. Science comes alive!
