Byte of Torah : : Tazria : : Ellen Lefkowitz
This is one of those Torah portions for which I have always dreaded having to write a D'var Torah. Here is the summary of Tazria from the Reform Judaism website: God describes the rituals of purification for a woman after childbirth. (12:1-8) God sets forth the methods for diagnosing and treating a variety of skin diseases, including tzara-at (a leprous affection), as well as those for purifying clothing. (13:1-59)
Essentially, this week's Torah portion is about the way in which the community deals with the impurities of childbirth and skin diseases. The portion goes into painstaking detail about how to separate women who have just given birth as well as members of the community who have these terrible skin diseases. Much modern commentary has struggled with why a woman who just gave birth is considered impure and why the quarantine is longer after the birth of a girl. As I began to think about this, I found myself drawn to the bigger theme of separation.
