Summer Pool Safety - For Children & Pets

Water poses a significant risk to pets.

According to the Dog Channel, as many as 40,000 pets drown each year.

To keep pets safe, follow these tips and read the full article for more information.

  1. Make sure your dog knows how to swim and is comfortable in the water. Note that some dogs will require a life jacket and/or swimming lessons.
  2. If you have a pool, be sure it has a fence around it. Consider installing a pool alarm.
  3. Don't let your pets drink from the pool or from other water bodies. Provide fresh drinking water whether you're poolside or out for a nature hike.
  4. If your dog will be swimming or wading in lakes or rivers, be sure talk to your vet about a Giardia vaccination to prevent infections.
  5. No drinking, wading or swimming in waters with blue-green alge
Be vigilant about blue-green algae, which is poisonous! According to the Indiana State Board of Animal Health, this toxic algae is a microscopic bacteria that is found in lakes, streams and ponds where water is warm and stagnant. It grows on hot, dry days, just like our summers here in Indiana. Don't allow your pets near blue-green algae. No wading, no swimming, no drinking.
Your Donation Makes All The Difference!

SNSI is a small, frugal non-profit organization that makes a big impact for animals in Indiana.

As a non-profit, we rely on the generosity and support of people like you! SNSI receives no government funding, and instead accomplishes our important work through individual contributions, grants, bequests, and funding from the Pet Friendly license plate.

Please consider a one-time donation to support our work. Or, become a recurring donor and give to SNSI monthly to help us better plan for just how many surgery certificates we are able to award each month! No donation is too small. Contact us today to learn more, or visit us on-line.
