Greetings!

The month of March usually brings intriguing changes. The phrase, "Beware the Ides of March" related to the death of Julius Caesar comes to mind, along with a vague memory from high school days of attending the Latin Club's party complete with togas, grapes, and reclining on couches. March also brings the celebration of St. Patrick's Day, and being ¼ Irish, I usually wear green and muse at some point about my ancestors. Others of you will have ski vacations, school trips, and visits to warm climates. Our newsletter this month highlights other changes-announcing the "on demand" phase of the Innovations in Trauma Therapy (ITT) online conference, explores my teaching calendar for the next several months, and includes the article, Why Study Energy Psychology? (scroll down to find this or click on the link to the left).

I hope this month brings you some spring delights to celebrate,

Maggie

My Live Training Calendar

I'm looking forward to a wonderful teaching trip during the month of May. Take a look at the events and the magical destinations and think about whether you can join me!

Starting on 1-4 May, I will be presenting at a unique conference in Heidelberg, Germany, called the "Bi-Focal Conference," which refers to therapy approaches that require at least a dual focus. I will be teaching a workshop on Thursday afternoon, 1 May, on Somatic Approaches to Ego-State Therapy, and one with Fred Gallo on Friday morning, 2 May, on Freedom From Pain: How Energy Psychology Can Help Solve the Puzzle of Pain Conditions. For more information, please contact here or Trenkle Organisation GmbH---Tel: 0741/2068899-0; Fax: 0741/2068899-9

From May 5-7, I am teaching a 3-day workshop in Avignon, France:  Healing the Divided Self: Ego-State Therapy for Post-Traumatic Conditions. Avignon is a lovely, ancient small city in Provence. I'll be teaching in English so combine travel with training and join us! For more information and registration, contact Guillaume Poupard gp@poupard.fr.

On 10-11 May, I will be in Paris. What a glorious time of year to be there! I'll be presenting Using Somatic Experiencing to Resolve the Triple Threat of Emotional Distress, Trauma, and Addiction.  My organizers

Bernard Mayer and Francoise Pascal of IETSP can be reached at mayer@ietsp.fr. You may also visit their website here. Just a note here about times when I teach in English and there is translation into French. Several people who have attended these workshops in the past have shared with me that they appreciate the bilingual/bicultural atmosphere and because the pace is slightly slower, they feel they have more time to integrate the material. So don't let language be a barrier. If your fantasy is to visit Paris this spring, here is a great opportunity.

At the end of my European journey, I will be teaching in Zurich, Switzerland from 16-17 May. The topic is Somatic Experiencing for Professionals Who Treat Trauma.  I always enjoy being in Zurich and this workshop promises to be both dynamic and powerful. There are only a few spaces left! For more information and registration, contact Silvia Zanotta.

AND ONE MORE POSSIBILITY YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS...

The Association of Comprehensive Energy Psychology has invited me to speak at their 2014 Conference: Talk is Not Enough: Activating Broader and Deeper Levels of Healing, scheduled from Thursday, 29 May - Sunday, June 1st. I'll present an all-day preconference workshop, "Healing Relational Trauma with Somatic Experiencing and Energy Psychology on Thursday, MAY 29th and hope to see some of you there!

Opportunity #1:

I'm offering a special sign-up bonus if you register for my all-day workshop on Thursday, May 29--Your free bonus is an audio/video download of a presentation with Dr. Fred Gallo and me on How Energy Psychology Can Help to Solve the Puzzle of Pain Conditions. This presentation will not be available in any form within the U.S. for the foreseeable future. Please act quickly to reserve your space in the workshop, secure the best discounts in registering for the conference, and receive your bonus!

Even though I'm not presenting during the main conference, I will stay on to enjoy its offerings and here's why: The Keynotes are fantastic and include: Eben Alexander, MD, neurosurgeon and author of Proof of Heaven; Donna Eden and David Feinstein, Bringing Energy Medicine to Trauma Treatment; Rollin McCraty, Ph.D., research director at HeartMath Institute, who will present data on how frequencies and resonances in the earth's magnetic fields overlap with heart and brain frequencies to impact human health and behaviors on a global level; Bruce Ecker, LMFT, on Memory Reconsolidation, the core process of transformation and change, and Jack Canfield on The Success Principles for Healers and Therapists.

And this is just the beginning. There are also more than 50 additional presentations and invited addresses covering nine different conference tracks, among them Fundamentals of EP, Specific Populations, Specific Approaches, Integrated Approaches to EP, Body Focused Therapies, Spirituality and Consciousness.

In addition, this conference will take place in a true retreat setting, The Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Phoenix Resort and Spa, located in the high Sonoran desert. I guarantee that this will be a live training experience you will savor long after the conference is over. Are you looking for a way to combine a vacation, outstanding training, and CEU's? This is my first choice of a US conference destination this spring. Go here now, before you forget, to download a conference brochure and register here. Because the best prices are offered for conference registration on or before March 31st, and because I believe so deeply in the importance of learning and applying the principles and practices of this rapidly growing, exciting branch of healing, I also encourage you to think about joining ACEP, the premier organization for learning, applying, and researching Energy Psychology. Find out how members are growing their practices, expanding skills, connecting and collaborating with other innovative professionals, earning CE's, and enjoying a wonderful menu of opportunities starting with the conference program. In this age of rapidly changing healthcare options, learn how to meet the challenges and create change through a medium that is relatively low risk for your most difficult clients.

Webinars and Teleseminars

We have taken a brief hiatus from our monthly online training program while working to promote the virtual Innovations in Trauma Therapy conference. In our April newsletter, however, we'll be making some announcements about upcoming virtual events in the spring and fall.

News You Can Use: Why Learn Energy Psychology?

My work with somatic approaches to healing trauma encompasses the use of Energy Psychology, as illustrated by my workshop presentation, "Healing Relational Trauma with Somatic Experiencing and Energy Psychology" which will be presented at the Energy Psychology conference on May 29. Energy Psychology  is also being combined effectively with acupuncture, EMDR, mindfulness, and a host of other methods to expedite mind/body/spirit healing. Healing modalities that other cultures have relied on for centuries are finally coming into their own in mainstream Western medicine as well as emerging more and more as innovative psychotherapies on their own merits.

Ample scientific validation is now available in support of this growing movement within psychotherapeutic practice. Rigorous analyses of randomized controlled trials produced at Harvard, UC Berkeley, Walter Reed, and other leading research facilities around the world are published in APA peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Clinical Psychology and other top forums.

To understand what this all means for your own practice might require a bit more context. Surprisingly, the Wikipedia article published as of this writing frames energy work in general as a fringe movement, part of "pop psychology" and esoteric spirituality-and possibly even fraudulent.

David Feinstein, one of the top experts in Energy Psychology explains,  "Energy Psychology has been controversial, in part due to its reliance on explanatory mechanisms outside of conventional clinical frameworks, and in part because of claims by its early proponents-without adequate research support-of extraordinary speed and power in attaining positive clinical outcomes." Of course, every innovation is considered suspect until it has had time to be thoroughly researched over several decades, and proven by the standards of its new field. This is finally happening for Energy Psychology.

The fact is that when practiced with the proper training and attunement to the client and his/her situation, energy psychology can indeed work with extraordinary speed and power, compared with talk therapy alone.

Breakthroughs once thought to be "too good to be true" are becoming more and more available as clinicians take up these practices and devise their own ways of adapting them to their own client treatment. In military hospitals, orphanages, refugee camps, and ordinary solo practices breakthroughs in treating post-traumatic stress disorder in particular are reproduced and relied upon as the fastest-working therapeutic intervention, well ahead of traditional "exposure" therapies.

As Anodea Judith, a thinker more on the spiritual side of the Energy Psychology field, has written in a recent post on her Blog:

Mind - Body therapies work both sides of the equation at the same time - uniting the physical and the spiritual as an integrated whole. They link our psychological problems to the experience of the body and link our physical problems to the experience of the psyche. This gives us an embodied experience of being whole in the world - fully present, active, and aware.

The interface between mind and body is energy. We can think of the body as hardware, like a computer, and the mind as the software that we run on that computer. But what makes the hardware and software work together is the electricity running through the system. Without electricity, nothing works at all. The software will not run correctly, and the hardware itself may even become damaged.

We're becoming more aware of everyday energy connections between mind and body. You may have noticed, for example, that your mental focus is refreshed after a 20-minute walk-and why is that? The body and mind are connected. Even light exercise can help you process stress hormones, change your attentional state, and oxygenates the brain, allowing thoughts to clarify and helping to direct your awareness more deliberately and less reactively.

With stunning advances in neuro-imaging, we are beginning to understand-and document-exactly why somatic and energy practices work so effectively on a neurological level. Efficacy studies using this technology as well as other related literature can be found here.

How To Enrich Your Clinical Practice Using Energy Psychology

What are some ways that practitioners can use simple EP tools to enrich their practice? Many modalities within Energy Psychology combine a reassuring therapist presence, a revisiting of traumatic incidents or fearsome feelings, and a light but deliberate touch on energy points on the skin, which clients administer themselves. For information on how to find trainings in your area with clinical credit for learning new skills, please visit these training & certification pages.

Whether you've been in business for decades or are just getting your practice warmed up, Energy Psychology may help you and your clients in the following ways:

  • Attain new breakthroughs: For example, with particularly "stuck" clients, you might discover new avenues of healing & integration via energy based techniques. As a simple example, EFT "tapping" is a set of remarkably simple interventions you can teach a client to do anytime for calming responses to traumatic memories. Learn more about Bessel van der Kolk's research on Energy Psychology's astonishing-and proven-outcomes for PTSD treatment here
  • Enrich your own self-care: Learning more about EP techniques can also help you help yourself between or during sessions by managing stress responses, integrating new experience, and refreshing your outlook on the healing process. Visit the following link for case studies, mechanism studies, population studies, review articles, and more here.
  • Improve your business: By adding EP modalities to your healing toolkit, you may be able to attract an audience that isn't interested in the typical psychotherapy offerings. There's a vast increase nationwide in audiences now for this kind of work, and you may be able to decrease your dependence on managed care contracts. Some research indicates that consumers who seek out holistic approaches including Energy Psychology and Energy Medicine outpace traditional medicine consumers by a ratio
    of 3:1.

We hope this month's newsletter has given you several reasons to celebrate spring both personally and professionally. If you can't take advantage of the ITT online conference, the Energy Psychology conference, or other live events, please forward this newsletter to someone you know who might enjoy it.

My very best wishes to you and thanks for being a part of my online community,
