News You Can Use

The Transparent Eyeball

Many of you are on vacation journeys this month. However long your journey may be and wherever you roam, you may have experienced that wonderful feeling of excitement and release that lets us know we're truly free...of work schedules, of daily routines, of outside obligations and other people's pressures.

We've all experienced those moments, perhaps too seldom, when time seems to stand still. Without noticing that anything has happened, your cares disappear, and your whole awareness is occupied with a single flower, a painting, an insight, or a fragrance. When was the last time you felt this way? Was it gazing out at the sunset? Watching your child sleep? Visiting with the cat? Cooking your favorite meal? Maybe it was on a stretch of open highway or hiking a mountain trail among tall trees or feeling blown about by ocean winds.

Whatever this experience was...bring it to your awareness now. Explore what the feeling are awakened. Then find someone, anyone, and tell your listener all about it. Where were you? What was happening around you? Why was this moment so compelling? Did it change something fundamental in your outlook, or simply afford you a moment's respite from day-to-day stress? Describe the richness of the experience, or the simplicity and ease, the feeling of weightlessness you felt when time... just... stopped.

You don't have to be on vacation to have those moments -- yet there's something about summer that evokes them, along with past memories of "time out of time." The days are long and the nights are easy, without the urgency that goes along with our busy work lives.

The American writer Emerson called this experience the "transparent eyeball," that state of mental calm when you feel like your individual identity has taken a vacation and you simply become part of the whole of creation, space and time.

Another poet, Mary Oliver, relishes this feeling of peace and connectedness in her poem "The Summer Day." To instruct her reader on the delicacy of life and savoring its most minute gifts, she explores the tiny movements of the natural world. Watching a grasshopper eat sugar, she likens this attunement to prayer and urges us on: "Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?"

How do you connect your passion for living with your call to provide some benefit to the world? How does that mission link with the whole of creation? What would you say is your place in the great network of life on our planet? How does it feel to be part of eternity? And finally, what becomes possible for you in this frame of mind? What unexpected insights arise when you soften your focus and expand your view in this way?

Whether you're working in social services or in a specialized clinic, or struggling in a difficult economy to keep your private practice viable, whether you're just getting started in your career or have been at it for thirty years, whether you've got a family to look after or more fully dedicated to your professional life... you've got to find a way to take a break. Relax, for everyone's sake.

Your daughter is angry with you? Relax. Together. Do something you can both enjoy, whether it's gardening or roller derby.

Another big invoice is coming due? Relax. For at least five minutes. Then take a deep breath and figure it out.

When you notice yourself getting riled about the potentially irksome things happening around you, maybe you'll remember that glorious sunset over the ocean and the profound peace you experienced as you took it all in. Rick Hanson, author of Buddha's Brain and expert on neuroscience and contemplative practice, writes about "Loving the world" as a mental discipline. Cherishing those moments of connectedness and expansion changes the way we relate to the world we live in. Not only does it actually help to re-wire our neurology, it also shifts our perception over time. Instead of seeing a daughter's rebellion as an ugly competition we might see her striving to express a creative part of herself in a new way. Rather than raging on about a speeding ticket, we might come to notice the virtues of slowing down.

Whatever gifts August brings, I hope you get to savor some timeless, "transparent eyeball" moments this month, and take in the nourishment that comes from knowing that all of life is interconnected, and that you are an amazing part of that whole.

Have a great August,

Maggie
