Greetings!
October is one of my favorite months of the year. I love the emergence of autumn colors, the arrival of more crisp temperatures (although here in California, we've had the hottest temperatures of 2012 this week!), and the excitement of the holiday seasons to come.

This month we feature our October 19 teleseminar with Claire Frederick and me on "Spirituality in Ego-State Therapy".
Our News You Can Use article is "Presence: Living the Heart of Connection" (scroll down or use the left-side menu to find it).

Teleseminars and E-courses
On Friday, October 19, from 9 am - 10:30 am Pacific, please join Claire Frederick and me for a teleseminar on Spirituality in Ego-State Therapy. This is a topic that excites both of us these days because of the huge potential for creating new positive experiences that maximize opportunities for integration and wholeness.
Here's what you will learn:
- The role of the "center core" in the spiritual growth of the self
- How work with various types of ego states can expand center core boundaries
- Tools to promote a variety of transpersonal experiences
- How the center core relates to the "deep self," the higher self, and the unconscious mind
- Ways of resolving inner barriers that prevent or limit
Our October seminars together have become a seasonal event and are one of the rare opportunities for us to teach together. Claire and I will also be discussing the new U.S. (and the global) certification program in Ego-State therapy as part of this event. If you have a strong interest in Ego-State work, or would like to find out what all of the buzz is about, please join us!

News You Can Use
Presence: Living the Heart of Connection
I recently taught a new course at the Esalen Institute in mid-September with my dear friend Dr. Noelle Poncelet. I was moved by the enthusiasm of our participants, particularly for segment of the workshop devoted to the art of being present with oneself to learn how to become your own sole mate.
The art of presence is about having a good relationship with yourself in order to become the person you were created to be, treating yourself well, and letting go of old beliefs and behaviors that create barriers to living the life you want to live.
Much of this part of the course focused on discovering innate wholeness and living an intentional life in alignment with the authentic self.
One of the experiential exercises involved Tara Brach's focus on becoming free of anxiety about perfectionism, which leads to shame and unworthiness. Dr. Brach, who is both a Buddhist priest and a psychologist, has made popular the practice of Radical Acceptance (to find out more, visit here).
One of my favorite experiential journeys based on her work is a practice I call "Finding the Land Beyond Fear." The first part of the inner experience is based on Rumi's poem, "The Guest House":
The Guest House
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
During the first part of the journey, I invited the group to create a space inside where they could feel safe to gather all the parts of themselves, known and unknown, positive and unwanted. The invitation is to greet each one actively, some as long-lost friends, and others with polite respect, taking all the time that's needed to complete those connections.
When ready, all the parts of the self take a journey to the "land beyond fear." While traveling, the group is invited to practice compassion and acceptance. If encountering pleasurable feelings, thoughts, or sensations, the instruction is to be aware of each, feel, and let it go. When meeting unpleasant feelings, thoughts, or sensations, be aware of each, feel and let go. The suggestion is to notice all experiences one after another as if there were all the time in the world to get to know it.
As this part of the journey is completed, the land beyond fear is reached. More time is given to explore all that is there is in that land and how each part of the self and all as a whole responds.
The ending comes with a sense of completion and an opportunity to journal or share experiences.
As you're reading this, you might want to try the journey yourself and be open to what you find and what finds you. It will be good preparation for our teleseminar this month, Spirituality in Ego-State Therapy on October 18 with Claire Frederick and me. Click here for more information and to register.

Enjoy the golden glow of the heart of autumn,
Maggie
