Editorial: You Become What You Think You Are

Welcome to the April 2013 edition of The Dive Industry Professional.  As we enter into the second quarter of the year most of the pre-season marketing is behind us and we should be measuring the results of our efforts.  Trade shows take a big part of our time, money and manpower, bu there is still nothing like face-to-face marketing for cost effective results.

One thing we've learned so far this year is that most of the industry is slower than last year.  The shows so far were good, but not as well attended as last year.  Sales are good, but not as good as last year.  There are a few exceptions.  Some companies are trying new ideas and in new markets.  The Blue Wild was a highly successful show in Fort Lauderdale.  The target market was freedivers and spearfishermen.  Over 100 exhibitors participated and the crowd was filled with young and athletic sportsmen and women.  Rick Stratton launched the second annual Dive & Adventure Travel Expo in Santa Clara and it is bigger than last year.  North California is proving to be an untapped market. An accessory company wanted to increase their sales but didn't want to waste valuable time, money and manpower using old fashion sales methods.  They decided to survey their Dealers to find out which method of communication they preferred and how often they wanted to hear from the company.  The results helped the company communicate more clearly and more effectively, and it helped increase sales.

There has been a little shifting of sales people in the industry this year.  "Sell Harder" may have worked yesterday, but adapting a marketing approach to "sell smart" is new millennium thinking. Companies that are focusing on product marketing and customer communications are realizing success with better products and better dealer relationships.

Beginning the sales process with marketing is the intelligent way to approach all sales.  Marketing is Smart Selling.

Dive Industry Association Has A Vision for the Future:   Since April 2001, the Dive Industry Association has been "Building a Better Industry, One Member at a Time."  We could not have done it alone.  A trade association is a group of like-minded people working together to make their industry a better place.  Not only a better place to work in, but a better place to enjoy.  Scuba diving is a lifestyle recreation.  We have so much fun diving that most of us have tried to make a living at it.  Some are more successful at it than others.  While we may have gotten the diving part right, the business side of diving has been challenging for many.  That's why we need a trade association that helps us deal with what challenges us the most.  
 
Dive Industry Association has grown over the years because we practice what we preach.  We say we support the industry and it shows in our commitment to exhibit at dive shows across the country.  We promote our members and we promote the industry at the Surf Expos and the Adventure Travel Shows.  We believe in being all inclusive, non-political and non-judgemental.  We only work on projects that our members find valuable and worthy of our time.  Our agenda is the completion of our Members' agenda.

Dive Industry Association is looking for Industry Professionals who would like to serve on our Board of Advisers in a volunteering capacity.  We need at least one person in each industry that specializes in diving, like manufacturing, retail and travel.  We also need an individual in each trade that is important to the growth of our recreation, like Marketing, Accounting, Law and Finance.

We are also looking for Members that are interested in serving on other the Board of Directors of other companies to help us make the industry more successful and balanced.

It's time to take an active part in the growth and direction of the industry and you owe it to yourself to take a closer look at the possibilities.   Read more

Santa Clara, CA - May 4-5, 2013

 

"A Growing Show in a Growing Market"
The second annual Northern California Dive & Adventure Travel Expo will take place on Saturday and Sunday, May 4-5, 2013 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, California.  The 302,00 square foot high-tech convention center consists of exhibit halls, meeting rooms, terraces, breakout rooms and a 607-seat theater.  Perfect for a Dive & Adventure Travel Expo.

Exhibitor setup begins on Friday at noon and concludes with an industry social poolside at the adjoining Hyatt Hotel at 6 PM.  The doors reopen on Saturday at 10 AM to an exhibit hall filled with 80 exhibitors in 140 booth spaces.  There is a cocktail hour scheduled from 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM and a Saturday Night Film Festival from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM.  21 Seminars are scheduled for Sat & Sun in Rooms A & B.  Approximately 50 FREE seminars and workshops are planned for the entire weekend.  Sunday hours are from 10 AM - 4 PM.
