February 14th. A day we think about love....
This Spotlight highlights God's love expressed in our churches throughout the region. From our two churches in Utah - a Christmas celebration where the afterglow remains, and outreach expands with God's blessings at New Hope - to a youth ensemble touring this summer, to the association coming together in celebration of Pastor Gonzales's ordination, to a group of churches coming together to better equip their volunteers to reach children for Christ at Ignite Tucson... all expressions of the love of God in and through His church. And don't forget the opportunity to show those men in your life that you really do care about them by inviting or sending them to Men's Round-Up at Prescott Pines....
As always, we would love to hear from you and put your church and its ministries in the Spotlight by sending us a feature article with pictures to Sandra,

Pastor Gonzales's Ordination
"There are times and moments in our lives and ministries that have a profound impact on us. The ordination process and ceremony for Carlos Gonzalez was just such a time," says Reverend Rick Seltzar of Grace Bible Fellowship. After approximately ten months of preparation, the event took place at Betania church on January 12th, 2013. The church was full including a panel of six pastors and missionaries. The service was bilingual. After about two and half hours, the church accepted the recommendation of the council for Carlos's ordination.
As the church shared testimony as to Carlos' integrity and ministry, the emotion was palatable. Pastor Rick gave the charge of ministry and the ordination council laid hands and prayer over Carlos and Maritza. The previous Pastor Nunez participated as well and gave his blessing in prayer and ordination support. Following the presentation of Carlos' ordination certificates (one in English and one in Spanish), Pastor Jose Esparza served communion with the leaders and the church celebrated the blessings and goodness of God. The day was culminated with a wonderful meal prepared by the ladies of the church. There was much celebration and fellowship.
Pastor Rick speaks of the unity, love, and support felt during the event, "This was the association being the association." The counsel was comprised of pastors from the area churches, a local missionary, as well as the support of Steve Engram, SWCC regional executive, Pastor Glen Connell of Valley Baptist Church, Reverend Tom Sawyer and Reverend Rick Seltzer from Grace Bible Fellowship, Pastor Jose Esparza from Mexico, and Pastor Nunez of Betania Church. All who gathered spoke of what an incredible blessing it was to be a part of Carlos' ordination.

 | Kristin Wright Interview |
There is a gem of training in Tuscon. Here churches unite across denominations in the goal of reaching children for Christ. Ignite is a joint venture of Christ Community Church, El Camino Baptist Church, Grace To The Nations, Oro Valley Nazarene, Pantano Christian Church and Vail Christian Church. This past January over three hundred children's ministry workers and leaders participated in the all day event. With over sixty great breakout sessions to chose from, everyone walked away with practical tips and a new enthusiasm for their ministries. The great seminars and workshops were designed to strengthen volunteers' ability to reach children in today's world including leadership, classroom management, special needs children, classroom safety and security, great game and craft ideas and helping children cope through grief. Click on the video to hear El Camino Baptist Church's Kristin Wright share about the history of the event.
Please contact Diane Yeager at dyeager@elcaminochurch.org if you would like more information or ideas of how to start such an event in your region.

Beryl Baptist Christmas Celebration Illuminates
Sometimes new faces appear in your church. You recognize them quite distinctly because, well, your congregation is quite small. At Beryl Junction, Connie and Jean were a new song to the little congregation. Previously attending a church of over 12,000 people in Enterprise, Florida, the couple brought with them high hopes for mighty movement in the small body. Since they had been involved in music ministry, the summer they arrived they proposed a Christmas program. And so it was on Saturday, December 1st at 7:00pm, Beryl Junction came to life in light to share the Light of the World.
Preparation was done with care and attention to detail. Pastor Arnold himself was up a ladder unscrewing the candle light bulbs in the church's beautiful chandeliers so that the ambiance would be just right - one candle instead of three was perfect. Jean installed dimmers to the circuits. The effect was quite... illuminating! A committee of volunteers had spent a day decorating the church. One lady set up several dozen nativity scenes which had been collected by her late mother. The Christmas tree was set up, and a lighted garland stretched across the bottom of the platform. Someone hung a beautiful Christmas quilt on one wall. Christmas wreaths hung on the doors welcomed visitors and lights on the walkway drew the weary.
The program lasted exactly one hour. Pastor offered the welcome and invocation. Jean selected a number of Christmas songs, mainly traditional carols. Someone donated a large flat screen tv so that the lyrics could be displayed and a new sound system was purchased for the event. Pastor Arnold wove Scripture passages between the carols. Using the KJV, the prose of the narrative reached out to LDS visitors that may have been in attendance. Lou Ann, the pastor's wife, sang "O Holy Night" as a solo, while she and Connie did "Silent Night" as a duet. Connie and Jean sang "The Prayer" and Jean sang "Joseph's Song" as a solo, while holding in his arms a life-size doll. To conclude the cantata, Jean gave the benediction, including an invitation to recite with him the sinner's prayer. An invitation for refreshments and fellowship followed as several people contributed cookies and candy, lemonade, hot chocolate, and hot cider.
"People are still talking about the event!" says Pastor Arnold. There were forty five people in attendance that evening. That may not sound like many but that is double the size of the congregation! Many of the visitors came as a result of personal invitation. The afterglow of the five candles lit that evening still remains months later. However small, Beryl Junction is a city on hilll and their light shines through all of their faces.

New Hope Bible Church is a small congregation of around 35 people, but we are significant in the eyes of God. He has proved it by His might and strength!
A new jail in Kanab, Utah which houses state and local inmates, offers great opportunities for ministry to those incarcerated and to mentor local inmates when they are released. I have had the opportunity to conduct Sunday afternoon worship services at the jail for three years. This past year, a member of New Hope who is a retired California police officer, began a Wednesday night Bible study at the jail.
This ministry has not been without challenges in our predominantly LDS state. The jail does not permit us to serve the Lord's Supper to inmates and we have been petitioning the local and state boards to reconsider this policy. We also had to overcome other policies which restricted distribution of daily devotionals and other worship material. As a church, we were able to gather around 300 Christian books for the new jail library.
During the past year, New Hope has been blessed by God in so many ways. Our giving was around 35% above budget, which enabled us to renovate our classroom building inside and out and to finally install new carpet in our Fellowship Room and Prayer Closet. People are not only giving their financial gifts, but their time and talents as well.
As HIS CHURCH and part of God's ETERNAL Kingdom Building project, we have been privileged to support a young man and his family who traveled here from PA to obey God's calling to minister to Mormons. His church plant is in Hurricane, Utah. We also added a missionary family in Peru who works with Wycliffe Bible Translators.
Esther 4:14 is one of my favorite verses, demonstrating God's sovereignty and providence in all situations for God's chosen children, "And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this!" I place an exclamation mark at the end of the sentence.
