communicate
When you read employment ads or job descriptions, how many times do you see "good communications skills" mentioned? Whether the job is for a higher-level executive or a sales recruit, employers value people who can get their messages across

We all expect salespeople, PR reps, and others in the public spotlight to have the proverbial "gift of gab". But with today's emphasis on teamwork and collaboration, the ability to communicate clearly and effectively is critical for just about everyone.
Communications in Practice

Consider some situations where you and your staff put communications skills to the test:
  • Presenting your department's hoped-for budget increases to management.
  • Hammering out requirements for an important software purchase.
  • Solving a touchy problem that crosses over departmental lines.
  • An e-mail thread that's so convoluted that no one remembers the original question.
The budget meeting calls for top-notch persuasive style, while the software requirements session needs an analytical approach, with lots of probing questions.  The problem-solving situation requires analysis, but also sensitivity and listening to the concerns of the departments involved. The e-mail boondoggle shows what happens when people use the wrong medium. Perhaps one phone call could have replaced that fruitless string of e-mails.

While many people are good at handling some of these challenges, few are good at all of them. The person who writes clear messages on factual topics may wash out on interpersonal issues. A good one-on-one communicator may get nervous and flub a formal presentation to a large audience.

The fact is, many employees can benefit from coaching and practice on communication skills. And when communication is effective, the whole business benefits. Clear, concise messages save time otherwise wasted on constant back-and-forth questions for clarification. Effective questioning and listening skills help ensure that issues come to the fore and are dealt with. When presentations are well-prepared and well-delivered, you are more likely to get the results you want and create a positive impression.
