Boomers, Gen X, Gen Y, Millenials...what do today's generation gaps mean to your next generation leaders?

As we enter a period where one generation is exiting the workforce and another generation is rising to leadership prominence, companies must look closely at whether current leadership development programs are suited to the needs of tomorrow's next leaders. Each generation has a very distinct leadership style, and a successful multigenerational organization tailors its leadership development programs to bring out the best across generations. Is your organization prepared for the challenges of developing the next generation of leaders?

Every Generation Creates a Different Type of Leader

With each successive generation to enter and climb through the ranks of the workforce, the concept of leadership has evolved to incorporate that generation's learning and management styles.

The Baby Boomers, for example, are strong, charismatic leaders with strong personalities. They excel at motivating, persuading, thinking strategically, and being decisive - characteristics that became essential when companies often struggled with slow or lagging information in a pre-Internet age.

By contrast, Generation Y is highly informed, and they're more likely to rely on data that they gain themselves than something that they're told by their managers. They're experts in abstract thinking, and they boast more ambition and social confidence than their predecessors.

Generation X is the natural bridge between these two polar extremes. Generation X-ers are typically socially progressive, and they're change-oriented and culturally sensitive, making them the natural intermediaries between the two overlapping generations. However, as a group that incorporates characteristics of both sides, they're not as skilled in the dominant strengths of either their elders or their youthful colleagues.

In order to create effective leadership development programs, organizations must understand what motivates each generation, and how to successfully harness that generation's unique workplace mentality.

Generation Y Presents the Next Leadership Challenge

Generation X-ers are increasingly assuming senior roles, but it's Generation Y that really represents the next leadership challenge. Ernst & Young (EY) completed a survey in 2013 that showed that 87% of Generation Y managers assumed their leadership roles between 2008 and 2013. In contrast, only 38% of Generation X assumed management roles in this period, and 19% of Baby Boomers. As the number of Generation Y workers swells to half the global workforce by 2020, Generation Y is the group primed to assume a growing percentage of leadership roles.

Many organizations have been working hard to adapt to Generation Y through onboarding and other entry-level training programs. Just as companies have begun to understand how to deal with Gen Y in an entry-level capacity, they're now tasked with the challenge of preparing leadership programs for this generation's strengths and weaknesses.

Generation Y graduated from college and struggled to establish careers amidst the worst economic crisis in a generation. As a result, Gen Y are poised to be more experimental as leaders, and may be more skeptical of the established order. As more members of Generation Y move into leadership roles, leadership power is expected to shift from a top-down structure to a more horizontal, democratic environment.

To be most effective, leadership development for Generation Y and even the Millenials must shift from formal, one-way event-style programs to more collaborative, experiential programs. Gen Y will learn faster in regular, bite-size doses as they'll see learning as part of the job. Mentoring is an invaluable tool to Gen Y, and savvy leadership development tracks will incorporate mentorship to facilitate learning leaders.
