November 2014
The Thanksgiving holiday is just around the corner, and many of us have so much to be thankful for.  However not everyone has even the basic needs covered at this time of year.  Below are some ideas for giving back to your community at this time of giving.

If you're looking for a new way to give thanks, consider one of these opportunities to give back to those who don't have as much to be thankful for:

  • Organize a Canned Food Drive. The web site Move for Hunger can help you organize a local food drive, with helpful checklists to make sure you've covered all of the details.  They will even send boxes and help with the heavy lifting!
  • Give the gift of warmth.  Warm coats make a big difference, and many of us have old coats in our closets that we no longer wear. Those coats can go to a great cause if you donate them to a winter coat drive. Check with your local churches or schools to find out if there's a winter coat drive you can contribute to, or check out One Warm Coat
for info on how to hold a successful coat drive of your own.
  • Volunteer to drive seniors. Have a comfortable car and some free time now and then? Become a volunteer driver for seniors. Many seniors need help getting to and from medical appointments or grocery stores, and don't have access to public transportation or enough money for cabs. Check out Create the Good for volunteer opportunities in your area.
  • Help military families. Military families face a wide variety of hardships; from relocating to a new town to managing family life while a loved one is deployed. Military families who are settling into a new home and community have many needs that volunteers can help with, from babysitting to locating a handyman. Take a look at this guide to Helping Military Families.

Looking for opportunities to give back but aren't sure what you have to offer? VolunteerMatch is a great resource for finding volunteer opportunities in your community, from adult education and literacy to working with children and seniors. If you feel daunted by starting your own project, check with your local food bank, homeless coalition, church or other community resource to find out how you can join in and give back.

All of us here at Expert Access wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday, and hope you spend the day surrounded by family and friends.
