The Molesworth Cycle Trail

Superb Biking and High Country Landscapes

Join us on the 4-Day Molesworth Cycle Trail for diverse  biking, from coastal vineyards to alpine lakes to thermal springs! Linking it all: New Zealand's largest farm: the 180,000 ha Molesworth Station, a wildly beautiful area that is also of conservation importance. It's one of New Zealand's first farms, and is steeped in history and tales of survival against the odds.

We'll follow sun-baked river valleys, admire sparkling waterfalls, and stay with farming families with rich stories to share about their lives and land.

The biking is graded moderate. Any aching muscles can be soothed in a thermal pool at Hanmer Springs, or a spa at the alpine lake village of St Arnaud.

Take Care Of Your Feet

One common mistake before starting a walk is, strangely enough, forgetting to clip your toenails. Try clipping them quite short. Banging your toes against the end of a stiff boot will leave you with extremely sore toes.

Blister prevention is another issue. Friction is the primary cause of blisters, so wear boots that fit and socks that don't rub. Carry moleskin (sheeps wool is another good material for this purpose) in your first-aid kit. This soft, cottony fabric with an adhesive backing can protect your feet from blisters. (Often the best approach to a blister is to encircle the hot spot with a donut ring of moleskin.) Rubbing a thin layer of petroleum jelly between your toes can also help prevent blisters.

Invest in some good hiking socks. Merino wool is a great material; synthetics are good, too. Always avoid cotton athletic socks. They retain moisture that can lead to blisters.

So True!

When management consultant and adventurer Jamie Fitzgerald and colleague Kevin Biggar were hit by a storm on day two of a 5,000km small boat race across the Atlantic thoughts turned to stopping rowing and throwing out a sea anchor in a bid to retain their position.

The 18 other teams were surely well ahead as the two were being dragged back to shore. But they kept rowing. For 42 hours. Nonstop. In the end they were first to Barbados 38 days later.

Why? "Sometimes when you think you are making the least progress you are actually making the most," Mr Fitzgerald says.

The Mesopotamia High Country Walk

DO NOT Miss This Tour !

The Mesopotamia High Country Walk is an awe-inspiring, four day fully guided walking tour, which includes the Mesopotamia High Country Station and the spectacular Peel Forest Scenic Reserve.

You will experience soaring landscapes, snow capped mountain ranges and wide open tussock covered tundras. High country stations have a unique part in the history of New Zealand and early pioneering characters have been immortalised in print in numerous books covering this era.

Cycle Helmets - Why helmets matter

About three-quarters of all cycling deaths are caused by head injuries. By wearing a helmet, you dramatically reduce the risk of a skull fracture if your head hits an object or the road. A helmet also reduces your chance of getting concussion. It protects your head from cuts and scrapes.

Wearing a helmet is compulsory for all cyclists on New Zealand roads.

Fitting method

  1. Loosen all the straps.
  2. Figure out which ends of the helmet are the front and back. Some helmets may be labelled with 'front' and 'back'. Normally the front of the helmet is rounder and clear of straps. Place the helmet on your head and tilt it forward until the front of the helmet  is two fingers width above your eyebrows.
  3. Adjust the dial (if fitted) on the straps at the back of the helmet -  to fit the back of your head.
  4. Do up the buckle under your chin.
  5. Adjust all the straps so they tighten firmly. Every strap should be firm, but you should still be able to move your chin enough to talk. If the helmet has separate chin and nape (back) straps, also check that your ears sit in the middle of the V shape of the straps and that the straps meet just below each ear lobe.
  6. Give the helmet a wriggle - forwards, backwards and sideways to check it stays in place. If you can uncover the forehead, sides of the head or cover the eyes, it will need to be adjusted again. If it keeps happening, the helmet will be the wrong shape or size
