Quote of the Month

"Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends."

Maya Angelou

Norway Plans TV Show of Fireplace Burning!!!

Norwegian public television plans to broadcast a burning fireplace for 12 straight hours, with firewood specialists providing colour commentary, expert advice and a bit of cultural tutoring.

"We'll talk about the very nerdy subjects like burning, slicing and stacking the wood, but we'll also have cultural segments with music and poems," Rune Moeklebust, a producer for state broadcaster NRK.

"It will be very slow but noble television."

Come on a walking or biking tour with Tuatara Tours, its better for you than television!

Is it true Bees Like Blue?

Have you ever noticed when you are out walking or cycling that some clothes you wear attract bees more than others.

Bees are trichromatic (have three photoreceptors within the eye). Whereas we base our color combinations on red, blue, and green, bees base all their colors on UV, blue, and green.

Bees do not see red and have a hard time distinguishing it from surrounding green leaf backgrounds. The colors bees see are blue-green, blue, violet, and ultraviolet, with research showing purple followed by violet then blue as their favourites.

Akaroa - Queen Mary 2

On the 14th March the Queen Mary 2 cruise ship is due into Akaroa.

Queen Mary 2 is the largest ship to visit NZ waters and this will be her inaugural visit to Akaroa. She was meant to visit the day after the February earthquake in 2010.

Some key facts:
  • At 345 metres long, Queen Mary 2 is 17 metres longer than the Auckland Sky Tower is tall
  • Queen Mary 2 is 17 decks high and towers more than 60 metres above the waterline
  • She can carry more than 2600 passengers and an additional 1250 crew
  • She features the largest ballroom and only planetarium at sea
  • Her numerous restaurants, bars and clubs include the Veuve Cliquot Champagne Bar and Todd English restaurant
  • Queen Mary 2 features onboard, Harrods, Hermès, Dunhill and Chanel boutiques.

The Keneperu Trail - Mix Up The Walking And The Cycling!

Kenepuru is one of the least discovered, and perhaps most exciting  areas in Marlborough, New Zealand (at the top of the South Island).

The Keneperu Trail is a four-day, fully guided Marlborough tour where walking and cycling allows you to fully absorb the spectacular scenery of the area.

It is a part of the Marlborough Sounds, which has been described as "a visual feast of the interplay between the land, sea, nature and light"....and is well known for its Marlborough wines and cuisine, and specialises in produce from the sea.

The Sounds have stunning views, dramatic wooded hilltops, a wide range of native birds, and gorgeous water vistas looking
into the many sandy bays that dot the landscape

Kiwis Definitely Not Flightless!

Statistics New Zealand has just released "New Zealand in profile 2013, an overview of New Zealand's people  economy and environment".

One of the more fascinating statistics is that we welcomed 2.6 million overseas visitors here on short-term travel in 2012 however in the same year 2.2 million New Zealand residents departed overseas for short -term travel, impressive in a country of 4.4 million people.

Who said Kiwis were flightless.
