Superb Biking and High Country Landscapes

Free bike hire for all January 2013 Tours
Join us on the 4-Day Molesworth Cycle Trail for diverse biking, from coastal vineyards to alpine lakes to thermal springs! Linking it all: New Zealand's largest farm: the 180,000 ha Molesworth Station, a wildly beautiful area that is also of conservation importance. It's one of New Zealand's first farms, and is steeped in history and tales of survival against the odds.
We'll follow sun-baked river valleys, admire sparkling waterfalls, and stay with farming families with rich stories to share about their lives and land.
The biking is graded moderate. Any aching muscles can be soothed in a thermal pool at Hanmer Springs, or a spa at the alpine lake village of St Arnaud.
Whats Included
- Daily continental breakfasts
- One lunch is on a station with the owners and other lunches country picnic style
- Evening meals are two courses
- Tea Breaks include award-winning local coffee or tea and a selection of home baking and "biker biscuits" or snacks.

Putting on a Show
| |
The tradition of agricultural shows in New Zealand dates back to pioneering days where each year the farming community gather to "bring the country to town" and showcase the fruits of their labours.
The country's largest Agricultural and Pastoral (A&P) Show is hosted by The Canterbury A&P Association and this year they will celebrate their 150th show with special VIP guests Prince Charles and Camilla set to attend.
There's nothing like the colour and excitement of a show; the magnificent animals on parade, the thrill of the sideshows and exhibits, the speed and agility of the dog trials, wood chopping and shearing competitions and the smells and tastes of the food and wine on offer, a great selection of the best this country can produce and an event not to be missed.
From 14-16 November, at Canterbury Agricultural Park, Christchurch.

| The Beginners Guide to the Outdoors...... | |
If you are new to the outdoors this summer, there are a few basics you will need to think about before heading out, most of these will involve some expenditure. Now is the time to consider dipping into your pocket, with those pre-Christmas sales coming up there should be a few bargains to be had. Remember cheap is not always best though-good gear may save your life, or at least make it a lot more comfortable. - Boots-think about what sort of terrain you'd like to use them in and for how many days at a time, will they be getting wet? It's best to consider something light but waterproof, with good support.
- Pack-are you considering day trips or longer overnight hikes? A good multi day size is around 50 litres, make sure it fits well and is comfortable with good padded straps. Extras that can be handy include a waterproof inner or pack cover and a space for a water bottle or hydration system.
- Clothing-three layers is a good guideline, the base layer to provide warmth close to the skin and absorb moisture, (merino or polypro are ideal for this) the mid layer for warmth (fleece or merino) and the top layer for protection from the elements , a good waterproof jacket made of Gore-tex or similar.

The Humble Almond....
| |

Got the munchies? Grab a handful of almonds.
Not only are almonds a satisfying snack they also contain a powerhouse of nutrients. Raw almonds (not roasted and salted!) are low in carbohydrates, high in dietary fibre, a good source of B vitamins and high quality protein. Almonds are also rich in monounsaturated fat, one of the two fats which may potentially lower ldl cholesterol.
In India almonds are considered brain food, and in China they are eaten for the benefits to the skin and their Vitamin E content. Almond flour or almond meal can be used in carbohydrate restricted and gluten free diets while almond milk is a popular choice for those with lactose intolerance issues.
Make your own almond milk: an easy recipe and the milk keeps fresh in the fridge for 2-3 days, useful in smoothies, soups and baking.
Ingredients:
1 cup raw almonds / water for soaking nuts / 3 cups water/ 2 dates (optional) / 1/2 tsp vanilla (optional)
Soak the almonds in water overnight or for at least 6 hours. Drain this water and discard. Blend the 3 cups of water, almonds and dates and vanilla in a blender until well blended and almost smooth. Strain using a cheesecloth or fine strainer and its ready to use
