IEI head
April 2013
Greetings!

Jewish LearningWorks' Israel Education Initiative is proud to provide you with creative resource materials and innovative ideas to enhance Israel Education in your programs all year round.

Since the establishment of the State of Israel, four new holidays have been added to the Jewish calendar:
Yom Ha'Shoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day)
Yom Ha'Zikaron (Memorial Day)
Yom Ha'Atzmaut (Independence Day)
and Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day)

These modern-era "Yoms", observed as national holidays in Israel, present a combination of remembrance and celebration resonating with Jewish Holidays' observance dating back to biblical times.

In this issue, we invite you to explore resources for Yom Ha'Zikaron and Yom Ha'Atzmaut. We hope that you find the material presented here useful and relevant to your work and encourage you to share your comments, thoughts and ideas with us and with the rest of our Bay Area community.

Commemorate, celebrate, and enjoy!

Poems and Songs
One of the most effective and touching ways to engage young people with the significance of this day is through poetry and music.

The Israel Center of the Jewish Community Federation has shared with us translated songs and poems for Yom Ha'Zikarom. Many include YouTube links for listening and viewing:

Water - The Source of Life
Israel Independence Day Posters
Every year since the first anniversary of Israel's independence in 1949 a poster is distributed to government offices, schools and to the general public throughout Israel.

While we wait for the 65th anniversary poster to be published, we bring you last year's poster dedicated to "Water - The Source of Life" highlighting Israel's water revolution. The postal office issued a new stamp on Yom Ha'Atzmaut Day and published a page of explanation on the design process and theme reasoning.

Poster Tales - Krazot Mesaprot
One of our most in-demand programs, Poster Tales: Israel's Independence Day Posters is available as an exhibit and an educational kit.
The backdrop for this curricular and creative program is the historical posters designed for Israel's Independence Day throughout the years. These posters offer a rare perspective into Israel's national mood and aspirations as well as an historic, design, and esthetic timeline. We encourage you to check it out.
