Hey Safety Stuff Subscriber,
.
Hope you're loving life and having fun.
Fun, warm and friendly--that's how I'd describe the Southern Maryland Electric Coop audience I spoke to since the last issue. Thanks for choosing me Brian. I'm looking forward to seeing you in Anaheim.
WIN A COOL PRIZE!
. . . and have your ergonomics idea featured in my keynote at the "ergoX -- an extraordinary ergonomic event" in Anaheim on June 7.
If you're doing or have done something fun or unusual as part of your ergonomic program. Let me know about it. ( richard@makesafetyfun.com)
If I choose your idea to include in my keynote "Great Leaders Make Safety Fun!," you'll get a choice of fun and unusual prizes such as a set of "Office Monkeys" or a "Yodeling Pickle." PLUS you and your company will be featured during ergoX.
There are excellent topics and speakers, particularly if you are involved in ergonomics. Here's a link to the ErgoX website:

LOTO--WHAT KIND OF ENERGY?
We have come up with a way to make our Lock Out Tag Out Training hands-on and fun. We give out a variety of items to the group while discussing types of energy that need to be controlled or eliminated.
For example, a mouse trap demonstrates stored energy,a wind-up toy- mechanical energy, hand warmers- chemical energy, a "Big Shot" water gun - water energy, a table lamp -electrical energy, etc.
The participants (in small groups) decide the energy their item represents and demonstrate it to the group. Then we ask the group to give an example of that energy on-site. This is usually an eye opener for the class and the facilitators.
The point of the exercise is to re-enforce the fact that lock out/ tag out is not just for electrical hazards.

LET'S PLAY OUCH!
These sports might be fun to watch for a few moments but I wouldn't want to be a player.
Fireball Soccer
It's just like regular soccer; except the ball has been doused in gasoline and then set on fire. Invented in Indonesia, it's played by martial arts students trying to overcome their fear of fire (a healthy fear if you ask me). Making fireball soccer even more difficult--they play it with bare feet.
Shin Kicking
Also known as "purring" in Wales, here's how it's played: Two men stand face to face with their hands on each other's shoulders. At the signal, they start kicking each other's shins until one loses his grip on his opponent. (This sport has failed to catch on in other nations.)

CHECK THIS OUT!
In every issue, I'll include at least one link to a site or video that is humorous, unusual, powerful or that could help you Make Safety Fun! So, let me know if you find (or have created) anything that I might be able to include in this section.

This is one in an extensive series of mini safety videos. They're okay overall. Some are better than others. There are few that delve into topics outside the standard safety fare but are important such as how foods affect our moods.

GETTING A GRIP ON FEAR
Fear can save your life. It's a protective emotion that humans have developed to survive. But fear also can cause harm, physically and mentally. For example, phobias - defined as "persistent, irrational fears of certain objects or situations" - can ruin a person's social life, in some cases causing them to never leave their home.
For most of us, our fears aren't so severe that they disrupt our daily lives. Still, fear is unpleasant and can mar your happiness - or even affect your career as a safety professional - if you let it hold you back from pursuing a promotion or goal.
For more than 25 years I've been practicing ways to control my negative emotions, including fear. I include these tactics as part of my seminar and talks on stress. Many attendees have said that my tips have made a difference in their lives, so I'd like to share some ways to better handle fear.
