SAFETY FILM FESTIVAL

Since the Academy Awards are in late February or early March, I plan a "Safety Film Festival" to coincide with the event.  This year, I screened WorkSafeBC student safety video contest entries.  For those not familiar, WorkSafeBC is a British Columbia organization dedicated to promoting workplace health and safety for the workers and employers of that Canadian province.

Each year, they host a student safety video contest in which secondary school students create videos that illustrate a safety theme. (We viewed the 2012 winners: http://ow.ly/Yuhbi

Here's a link to the 2015 contest winners: http://ow.ly/YrmDu

During our February Safety Committee meeting, I provided sparkling cider in gold champagne flutes, along with gold foil chocolate safety coins.  I dimmed the lights for an elegant effect, and as participants arrived for the meeting, they thought they were in the wrong room! See below:

We watched 12 of the WorkSafeBC videos.  I created a ballot, and each participant voted for their favorite for "Best Picture." We then determined the first, second, and third place videos.  Since the topic of the 2012 contest was "Home in One Piece," we then went around the room and each participant answered the question "What motivates you, your friends, or your family to come home safely from work?"

The safety film festival is a fun way to cover potentially dull topics and to improve the chances of participants retaining the information.

Female, 23, texting while on skateboard. Fractured wrist.

"Male 14, in parking lot standing on shopping cart and texting at same time, fell and hit head. Minor head injuries."

LISTEN TO YOUR WIFE

You've probably never heard of Carolyn Hopkins, but if you travel a lot by train or plane, you've definitely heard her voice. From her home in Maine, Hopkins has recorded thousands of airport and train station announcements since the 1990s.

Some of her greatest hits: "Welcome to the New York Kennedy International Airport." "This is a special security announcement." and of course, "The moving sidewalk is about to end."

In a 2012 interview with NPR, Hopkins admitted that her odd career has created a few surreal moments--like when she hears her own voice tell her (and everyone else) not to leave any bags unattended.

One time, her husband was picking her up at the airport, and a security officer told him, "Buddy, you gotta move. You hear that voice up there? You gotta move."

His reply, "Well I don't pay attention to that voice at home, why should I now?"

"FINDING YOUR FOCUS MESSAGE BEING INCORPORATED BY EMPLOYEES"

Richard,

First of all, I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation for presenting to our employees over 10 (grueling) sessions!  We have received quite a bit of random, unsolicited (and some solicited) feedback that is very complimentary.

Your messages on "Finding Your Focus" were heard and in many cases being incorporated by engaged employees.  As we continue our journey of reshaping and truly embodying a comprehensive safety culture (life and work safety), we will look to deliver our messages through impactful experts such as you.

ALL ABOUT YOU
THE BENEFIT OF BREAKS

"Take a break." When was the last time someone told you that? Taking a break has become passé in our modern "go, go, go, be as efficient as you can and stay connected or else" business world. But in any of your endeavors, going at something steady for a long time without a break is counterproductive.

Don't just take my word for it - this subject has been studied intensively by many research groups, including the U.S. Army Institute, the University of Amsterdam and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The studies conclude that you should "take breaks if you want to perform at your best."
