HEALTHY HEART
For my "Valentine Safety Meeting" the topic is " Safety Tips to Keep Your Heart Safe and Healthy".
Each person will get a red paper heart and pen. Then I'll ask everyone to write a tip on ways to keep your heart safe and healthy (tips can be physical or emotional). The hearts will go in a heart- shaped basket. Then we'll pass the basket around and each person will take a heart and read the tip out loud.
I'll start a discussion on any key points that may have been missed and we'll take a group photo with everyone holding up the red hearts. I'll post the photo on our safety bulletin board.

"HELP! FIRE!"
Firefighters in Middleton, ID responded to a two-alarm blaze in rural Boise in 2015. According to Victor Islas, a community relations officer for the department. "Once the captain did his walk-around, he could hear something or someone inside yelling, "help, fire, help, fire," Islas said. Crews went into "rescue mode" and called for backup, thinking that the calls for help were coming from an elderly female, Islas said.
The crew used thermal imaging equipment to try to locate the woman, but she wasn't detectable. The brave firefighters went into the burning structure to perform a search. When they entered the room where the calls for help were coming from they found two parrots, one of them sitting on a table saying "help! fire!"
The boisterous female parrot was rescued, along with a quieter male parrot. The female parrot was given oxygen by way of an adult oxygen mask, Islas said. 'She immediately perked up and started to imitate the sounds of the sirens."
No one was injured in the fire, which ended up being contained to only one room in the house, according to the Middleton Fire Department.

"WE USUALLY DON'T GET THAT"
Some feedback from Matthew Johnson who hired me to give talks to employees at Ameren:
Richard is a truly an "out of the box presenter" when it comes to delivering a " Focus on Safety" message.
He kept our management and union attendees attention throughout his program and we received nothing but positive feedback...we don't usually get that.

CHECK THIS OUT!
In every issue, I'll include at least link to a site or video that is humorous, unusual, powerful or that could help you Make Safety Fun! So, let me know if you find (or have created) anything that I might be able to include in this section.
Many of you have probably seen "Shake Hands With Danger." It' a safety film classic. The soundtrack is as campy as it gets--but I like it! If you haven't seen it, it's worth a look:
Here's a remix of the video that is fun if you've seen the original version:

THE POWER OF PRAISE
Praise is powerful. And we all enjoy receiving it when it's honest and not prompted by ulterior motives. Telling people how much you appreciate their work or something they've done benefits you as well because it creates pleasant feelings.
Besides making people feel good, praise can inspire employees to perform better. This makes the ability to praise a valuable leadership tool.
