How would you like your employees to:

Focus Better

Worry Less

and make

Fewer Mistakes That Lead to Accidents

Every year, un-focused acts cost billions of dollars in damage and injury.

 "FIND YOUR FOCUS"

one of my most popular talks is your solution to these types of problems.

Bring me to your site or convention and I can help your employees, supervisors, managers, (and you) in three major areas:

  1. Improved concentration
  2. Increased attention to detail
  3. Reduced anxiety and distractions from negative emotions

So, contact

Michele Lucia today

[email protected]

. . .so I can help you & your employees improve their safety performance by learning how to focus better.

Hi Richard!

When I conduct an overhead crane course, I include a parody to a well-known folk song to liven things up. There are several parts of a crane and to ensure our guys remember the parts of a crane, I put them to a very catchy tune.

Remember the song we used to sing as kids entitled,"There a Hole in the Bottom of the Sea"? It went like this: "There's a flea on the wart on the frog on the log in the hole in the bottom of the sea...."

Well, what I do (and I always sing it in front of the students in all the classes) is put the components of the crane into lyrics following the song.  It goes like this:

Erhmmm (clearing throat)

There's a runway that's a part of a crane
There's a runway that's a part of a crane
A runway, a runway
A runway is a part of a crane

There's a bridge on the runway that's a part of a crane
There's a bridge on the runway that's a part of a crane

A bridge, a bridge
A bridge is a part of a crane

There's a trolley on the bridge on the runway that's a part of a crane
There's a trolley on the bridge on the runway that's a part of a crane
A trolley, a trolley
A trolley is a part of a crane

There's a hoist on the trolley on the bridge on the runway that's a part of a crane
There's a hoist on the trolley on the bridge on the runway that's a part of a crane
A hoist, a hoist
A hoist is a part of a crane

There's a drum on the hoist on the trolley on the bridge on the runway that's a part of a crane
There's a drum on the hoist on the trolley on the bridge on the runway that's a part of a crane
A drum, a drum
A drum is a part of a crane

There's wire rope on the drum on the hoist on the trolley on the bridge on the runway that's a part of a crane
There's wire rope on the drum on the hoist on the trolley on the bridge on the runway that's a part of a crane
Wire rope, wire rope
Wire rope is a part of a crane

There's a hookblock on the rope on the drum on the hoist on the trolley on the bridge on the runway that's a part of a crane
There's a hookblock on the rope on the drum on the hoist on the trolley on the bridge on the runway that's a part of a crane

There's a hook on the block on the rope on the drum on the hoist on the trolley on the bridge on the runway that's a part of a crane
A hook, a hook
A hook is a part of a crane

There's a safety latch on the hook on the block on the rope on the drum on the hoist on the trolley on the bridge on the runway that's a part of a crane
There's a safety latch on the hook on the block on the rope on the drum on the hoist on the trolley on the bridge on the runway that's a part of a crane
A safety latch, a safety latch
A safety latch is a part of a crane

There's rigging under the latch on the hook on the block on the rope on the drum on the hoist on the trolley on the bridge on the runway that's a part of a crane
There's rigging under the latch on the hook on the block on the rope on the drum on the hoist on the trolley on the bridge on the runway that's a part of a crane
There's rigging, there's rigging
but RIGGING'S NOT PART OF A CRANE.

This is where the class always erupts in laughter (as they do throughout the entire song/lesson)  along with fanatic applause.

BUT, they always remember the parts of a crane! It's a real hoot when everyone gets singing.

... and YES, SAFETY IS FUN!!!

YOU TUBE SAFETY U

Many of us use YouTube to look up household tips like how to fix a dishwasher or how to tie a tie. But there are also some safety-related clips out there. For example you can learn . . .

How to fall on a snowboard.

How to see in the dark.

How not to burn your tongue on hot coffee.

How to survive a lighting strike.

How not to fall off a roof (or a horse).

and an after the fact video:

What to do if you poke yourself in the eye.

DEATH BY BUBBLE GUM

Choking on bubble gum has caused deaths, but this the first "exploding bubble gum" death ever (for now!).

Vladimir Linkhonos lived in the city of Konotop, in north-east Ukraine. He studied chemistry at the regional campus of the Kiev Polytechnic Institute, and like a lot of chemistry students, he liked to fool around with explosive chemicals.

One afternoon in December 2009, he had 3.5 ounces of an unidentified explosive powder sitting on his desk in a small plastic bag. Next to the bag he had a saucer of citric acid, a common food additive, also in powder form. Family members say Likhonos liked to dip his bubble gum in the citric acid to give it a sour taste.

On this particular day, however, he dipped hi bubble gum in the wrong powder. As soon as he popped the gum in his mouth, it exploded. He suffered horrific injuries to his face ad lower jaw and died a short time later.

Hey Richard,

It was a pleasure meeting you and spending a little time with you at the safety summit. I wanted to thank you so much for doing an outstanding job last week. I received a lot of positive feedback on your presentations and I know our membership gained a lot of valuable insight from you --- you also carried creditability with everyone.

Thanks again for a great-great job.

LEARNING TO SAY "NO"

Are you too busy? Does your to-do list seem to never end? When you finish one project, are three more put on your plate? Although better time management may help, sometimes the reason a person has too much to do is because they don't say "no" enough - or at all!

Saying no can be difficult, especially if it's to someone we like or love. If a friend asks you to help them move, saying no may make you (and your friend) feel like you don't have a very strong friendship. And even if you have a good reason to say no, it still isn't pleasant to tell someone you can't help them.

Here's a link to the rest of the article in Safety and Health Magazine

If you prefer, here's a link to the my podcast based on the article which includes more details about the topic:
