What's Happening Safety Stuff Subscriber?

All kinds of good stuff I hope!

My time in Omaha was fun. That's my usual M.O. Thank you, Susan and Bree, for hiring me for your NSC convention. It was a pleasure working with you.

Next, I'm off to a wonderful city, Galveston, TX. I'll be spending time with the leaders at Geo Specialty Chemicals, passing on some ideas on how to create a more vibrant safety culture.

ONLY TWO WEEKS LEFT!

Once again I'll be hosting a Professional Development Seminar at the National Safety Council's Annual Congress and Expo. This year it's in Atlanta. You don't have to attend the convention to attend my all-day "Spice It Up!--Easy Ways to Turn Your Safety Presentations From Bland to GRAND! Seminar on Thursday, October 1st.

Not only will you have a great time, but you'll learn dozens of ways to bring new life to your safety meetings and training.

Here's a link if you'd like more information or to register:

I'll also be hosting a "Find Your Focus" technical session at 9:15 am in room 407 on Wednesday, September 30th. Even if you don't attend, stop on by and say "Hi" and get a free finger puppet.

HANDY & DOOR REMINDERS!

To promote spotting and getting help backing up I went to several different offices and asked everyone to give me a hand signal they use to when spotting. Then I took a photo of their hand. People may not like to have their picture taken but if it's just their hand, they gladly oblige.

Since we hung the posters, a lot of people are looking at them to find their hand. And many people try to guess who the different hands belongs to. So the posters are creating interest and are great reminders about spotting while backing up. I'm hoping it helps us to keep focused on eliminating our accident frequency.

I'm also using foam door hangers to pass along the message to work safe. I hand them out to supervisors and ask them to give it to drivers to put in their truck for a day. The driver then initials and dates the back of the hanger. The next day the reminder is passed on to someone else to keep in their truck for a day and so on.

A nice little reminder to keep safety on your mind all day long and also pass the message on.

HURTFUL FUN

I had a set of this "toy" that my children and I played with. And we played with them at adult parties too!  (I was a full-time safety professional at the time!) Did you ever have a set?

Remember this pointy toy from the 1980s? Played like horseshoes, kids (and adults) threw plastic darts toward a target on the ground (or at each other). Lawn darts, or Jarts, were hugely popular, selling 1.5 million units per year . . . until the deaths.

Why did the darts stick in the ground so easily? Each one was topped with a 1 3/4-inch metal tip that weighed a whole pound! Not surprisingly, lawn-dart injuries sent more than 6,100 people (mostly children) to the ER in an eight-year period.

In 1987, after a lawn dart killed seven-year-old Michelle Snow, her father David convinced the Consumer Product Safety Comission to launch an investigation.

Once the commission saw the alarming statistics--three dead, one comatose, thousands injured--it went beyond a standard recall and issued an official ban.

Lawn darts were removed from stores in December 1988. To this day it's illegal to sell them.

HELP, I'M STUCK IN THE LOO!

Frustrated British officials made the following statistics public in the hope that Londoners "would stop calling the fire brigade just because you don't want to pay for a locksmith."

From 2009 to 2013, the London Fire Brigade received:

  • 3,012 calls from people who were trapped in the bathroom
  • 103 people who were locked in parking garages
  • 69 people who were locked in offices and shops
  • 12 people who were trapped in cemeteries
  • 4 people who were trapped in gardens

PEOPLE WERE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED

Good morning Michele,

Everyone was so impressed with Richard. His presentation was great. People were pleasantly surprised by how much time he spent here that day talking to folks. Other comments I heard were: "He's real." "He's sincere." "You can tell he actually believes what he's preaching."

I always take notes. An NPPD executive was sitting next to me and asked for a copy of my notes. He emailed to say he had bought some finger puppets and had even passed some out!

Thank you for all your work and hope we will be able to work together again.

All About You:
The Positive Force of Goals

Goals can be tricky. Sometimes they inspire us to improve our lives. Other times they're discouraging. If you set a major goal and don't achieve it, you'll probably feel down about it - even if the failure was out of your control. And if you're not enjoying your life right now because you're waiting to reach a goal, you're draining your daily happiness.

"After I lose 60 pounds I'll be able to do the things I enjoy every day." "Once I retire I'll start living the life I deserve." "When I become the EHS manager, I'll like working here." These types of thoughts can dominate your mind and greatly affect your emotions. I'm not saying you shouldn't set goals. On the contrary - they can be a powerful positive force that inspires you to achieve things both in your personal and professional life. And you can eliminate their potential downside.
