SAFETY TABOO
Hi Richard,
I have really enjoyed your website and have used a lot of different ideas at our safety meetings.

At our last safety meeting, we played Taboo. We made up our own cards. At the top of each card is a word relating to safety. Below this word is a list of "restricted words". The object of the game is to try to get your teammates to guess the word at the top of the card without saying any of the "restricted words" in the process.
A player from the opposite team will observe to make sure none of the "restricted words" are accidentally said. For example, the word at the top of the card might be Ear Plugs. And the list of restricted words below are: ear, plug, head, noise, listen, hear, talk, PPE, loud, volume, etc.
Everyone had fun and participated. We were able to cover a variety of topics and discussed them briefly once the correct answer was given.

"BE CLEAR ON CANCER" CAMPAIGN
These are the most unique warning signs I've heard of. I guess they're a good marketing idea. On second thought, they might be an excellent one.
Launched by Public Health England in October 2013, the "Be Clear on Cancer" campaign hopes to raise awareness of blood in urine as a symptom of bladder and kidney cancers. Heat-reactive signs were placed in urinals in the restrooms of sports stadiums around Great Britain.
When the signs are not in use they look like sheets of black plastic. When someone urinates on them, the heat from the urine causes the black to fade away revealing a red sign with white lettering that reads "If you see blood in your pee even if it's 'just the once' tell your doctor."
Public Health England hopes the signs will save lives by encouraging people to seek treatment as soon as there's a sign of trouble. Each year in the U.K., some 16,600 people are diagnosed with kidney and bladder cancers, but if they're caught early enough, the survival rate is as high as 95 percent.

CHECK THIS OUT!
In every issue, I'll include at least one link to a site or video that is humorous, unusual, powerful or that could help you Make Safety Fun! So, let me know if you find (or have created) anything that I might be able to include in this section.

This short video "Four Rules for a Health Lifestyle" animated for Harvard Medical School gets right to the point. I like it. Though it was animated by students it still would work well to show before a safety and health meeting for adults.

Corrective Behaviors and Reminders: How to Approach People
Pointing out another person's mistakes or unsafe behavior can be the toughest part of a safety professional's job. That's because nobody enjoys being told they're doing something wrong.
I struggled with this when I first became a full-time safety supervisor. Whenever I left my office to begin an inspection, the first workers to see me would call out "Haaawwwk!" This was a warning to let everybody know I was "on the move." And when I came upon a work crew, the first thing they would do when they saw me was check to make sure they were wearing their personal protective equipment. Sound familiar?
Eventually, I learned how to deal with this reaction. But more important, I worked on my disciplining skills so that when I had to point out a problem, it was accepted more easily.
