SAFETY STEW

Winter blahs seem to be setting in with our employees. So, we decided to try something fun, easy and inexpensive that would lift spirits, get the workers thinking about safety more, and give them a hot bowl of stew!

Getting the ingredients for the "Safety Stew" lasted the whole month. We included two ingredients a week:

  1. Meat = Lifting techniques
  2. Potatoes = Snow Shoveling
  3. Onions = Slips, trips, falls
  4. Carrots = Construction site
  5. Corn = Manufacturing
  6. Green Beans = Everyday basics
  7. Tomatoes = Cold weather
  8. Spices = Personal Protection Equipment

Here's how it works:

We posted all of the ingredients for everyone to see to get them thinking (stewing) ahead of time.

Every Tuesday & Thursday we picked one ingredient at random.

For example on Tuesday we picked Carrots. Then, employees had until Thursday to come up with 20 safety tips for working on a construction site that we posted in a designated area (i.e. dry erase boards, poster boards).  Once we get 20 tips, we added carrots for our stew. Thursday we picked another ingredient to be earned by the following Tuesday.

Once we got all the ingredients we cooked up a wonderful stew so everyone was able to enjoy a nice hot bowl of safety!

MMMPH! MMMPH! MMMPH!!!

In 2013, emergency services in Dunedin, New Zealand, received a call from a woman who could only communicate by mumbling. The dispatcher asked, "Do you live in Dunedin?" the caller replied, "Mmm-hmm." So the dispatcher started rattling off street names until finally the caller said, "MMM-HMM!" Then she gave her house number by tapping on her phone.

Paramedics and police raced to the house, unsure if the caller had been kidnapped or injured. When they arrived, the woman ran out holding up a tube of superglue. She was rushed to the hospital, where doctors used paraffin oil to separate her lips.

After she could talk again, the 64-year-old woman (who understandable didn't want anyone knowing her name) explained, "I got into bed and I could feel this tingling on my lips, so I thought I'd get the cold-sore cream. I got out of bed, and I dived into the cupboard, and I couldn't smell it because I was blocked up. And then I got into bed and thought, 'What have I put on my mouth!?'"

THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING

The plane thumped, and the pilot came on the intercom. "Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize, but that thump you just felt was the Number 1 engine malfunctioning. No cause for concern, we can continue safely with just our remaining engine. However, instead of a two-hour flight, our trip will now take four hours."

Everyone groaned at the delay. Then a passenger grumbled, "I hope the second engine doesn't malfunction. Then we'll be up here all day!"

CHECK THIS OUT!

In every issue, I'll include at least one link to a site or video that is humorous, unusual, powerful or that could help you Make Safety Fun! So, let me know if you find (or have created) anything that I might be able to include in this section.

Though this short video by "The Weather Channel" is titled "How NOT To Drive On Ice" it actually also covers all the basics of driving safely in snow/ice in less than two minutes.

This is a fun page: "Safety Games for the Workplace." There are a variety of resources and descriptions of several safety games--some that include free downloads.

 "WE USUALLY DON'T GET THAT"

Some feedback from Matthew Johnson who hired me to give talks in January to employees at Ameren:

Richard is a truly an "out of the box presenter" when it comes to delivering a " Focus on Safety" message.

He kept our management and union attendees attention throughout his program and we received nothing but positive feedback...we don't usually get that.

All About You

KNOW THE 'WHY' BEHIND YOUR GOALS

When a refueling outage occurred during my years as a full-time safety professional in the nuclear power industry, one of our performance goals was zero lost-time injuries. Two days into the outage, a carpenter fell from a scaffold and broke his back. Thankfully, he recovered from his injury. But sadly, right from the start of the outage, our lost-time goal was ruined.

Goals can be like that sometimes - disappointing. They also can be encouraging and a feel-good experience when we achieve them. Either way, they are worth setting.

Here's a link to the rest of the article in "Safety & Health Magazine" where you'll find ways to make your goals more inspiring:
