As thoughts of autumn arrive, many feel the pull of pilgrimage to Hocking Hills. Scenic hiking trails traverse a terrific topography of cliffs, gorges, & waterfalls. Hocking is a non-contiguous park with patches of parks sprinkled across 2,500 acres. - The most visited park destinations are: Old Man’s Cave, - Ash Cave, Cedar Falls, Conkle's Hollow, Cantwell Cliffs, & Rock House. - The most popular of these parks is Old Man’s Cave. The name comes from the hermit Richard Rowe who is actually buried beneath the ledge of the main cave. A one half mile loop will reward you with views of waterfalls and rapids. There are quite a few stairs and some steep drop-offs in some places. More ambitious hikers can take the Grandma Gatewood trail that will lead to Cedar Falls. - Located 17 miles to the South of Old Man’s Cave is Ash Cave. Ash Cave is the largest, most impressive recess cave in the State of Ohio. Two trails provide a delightful trek to this special spot. Ash Cave is named for the huge pile of ashes found under the shelter by early settlers. The largest pile was 100 feet long, 30 feet wide, and 3 feet deep. - Lodging can be difficult to come by in the Autumn months, so it's a good idea to arrange your visit in advance. If you can’t arrange a fall foliage visit, any other time of year will be a memorable, uplifting experience as well. --RSIR |
