Have you ever been walking in Eden Park near the Gazebo at dusk on a dark autumn night and felt a sudden chill creep up the back of your neck? Did you notice a shadowy movement along the stairs? If so, you may have seen the ghost of Imogene Remus. - How this might have come to be is rooted in history. In 1927, a terrifying car chase developed with nationally known bootlegger, George Remus, racing after his then wife, Imogene, as she was being driven to the courthouse to file for divorce. - ![]() Remus was enraged with Imogene for having liquidated a vast portion of the profits made by him through an astonishingly profitable bootlegging business. George and Imogene had lived a Gatsby-like life until his luck ran dry and he was sentenced to two years in the slammer. - Imogene was the only person with knowledge of Remus’ hidden money and resources. An undercover prohibition agent, Franklin Dodge, gleaning this kernel of information, developed a depraved plan to reap an immense payday. He sought out and became the paramour and partner in crime with Remus' wife. Together, they cashed out much of Remus’s fortune. - After release from prison, the day arrived for Imogene and George to finalize their divorce. On the way to the courthouse, George caught site of the cab in which Imogene was riding. With hackles raised, Reumus ordered his driver to give chase. Imogene's cabbie lost control on the curve near the Gazebo. The cab‘s screeching tires announced the impending denouement. The thud of the crashing cab added a note of fateful dread. George leapt out of his car, ran to the disabled cab, pulled out his gun and shot Imogene dead. - It is said that crimes of passion leave a trail of energy. Perhaps this gives credence to Eden Park sightings of Imogene to this day. --RSIR |
