Our May article was about local hikes. This month we want to highlight some great hiking venues a bit further afield. It's all about getting outside and appreciating nature's bounty of our beautiful region. - Burr Oak State Park: Near Athens. This park has over 25 miles of trails. The Wildcat Hollow offers two trails: a 15 mile loop and a 5 mile loop. A 664 acre lake is great for fishing- either from the lakeshore or from a rented boat. There are 30 cottages and a large number of camping sites. - Clifton Gorge Nature Preserve: Yellow Springs. This 268 acre preserve features spectacular dolomite and limestone gorges. Hiking here you will view the Little Miami River as it plunges over falls and rapids between narrow cliffs. Dogs not allowed on trails. - East Fork State Park: Bethel. Closer than some, this park is so huge, you could spend weeks exploring the trail system. For instance, the Steve Neuman Trail is 32 miles long. The 8.4 mile Poplar Loop and 5 mile East Fork Loop are more modest. - Fort Ancient: Oregonia. Many people pass by the signs to Fort Ancient on I-71 without stopping, but did you know this impressive site was Ohio's first State Park? If you want an easy walk amid this stunning historical site, the 1.6 mike loop trail is a perfect choice. - Hueston Woods State Nature Preserve: Oxford. This SW Ohio gem offers 2.3 mile Big Woods & Sugar Bush Trails. After your hike, stop in for a drink at the Lodge. Dogs are not permitted in the nature preserve. - John Bryan State Park: Many say this 752 acre park adjacent to Clifton Gorge is the most scenic state park in western Ohio. There are several trails from which to choose. The Rim Trail is moderately difficult but offers awesome views. - Little Miami State Park: Local hikers and bicyclists are rightfully proud of this magnificent trail, but it attracts visitors from around the region. - Miami Whitewater Forest: Harrison. The Badlands Trail is 1.7 miles and passes a waterfall. The Shaker Trace trail is a paved, 7.7 mile loop. - Mohican State Park: Loudonville. If you're in the mood to drive up I-71, this wonderful park offers a 9.3 loop trail that features a waterfall, lake views and a wooden bridge. - Red River Gorge: Slade, Kentucky. This is a very popular choice for outdoor enthusiasts. While often crowded, at 29,000 acres, there's plenty of opportunities to privately commune with nature. - Shawnee Lookout Park: North Bend. Enjoy 3 short trails that offer spectacular views of the Ohio River and Great Miami River valleys and unique, historic features. - Versailles State Park: SE Indiana. If you have a desire to 'go west', you might find the shorter trails of this park to your liking. - Seriously dedicated hikers may be interested in the Buckeye Trail, a 1,444 miles long trail that covers every corner of Ohio. Enjoy the outdoors and happy hiking! -----RSIR |
