Winter is gone and our long national nightmare is over! Let's get out and walk. There are over 100 parks and preserves in our area. Some may be closer than you think! - Boone County Arboretum: 9190 Camp Ernst Road, Union Kentucky. Also known as Central Park, this is the nation’s first arboretum within an active recreational park. A trail of over 2 miles winds through 3,600 trees and shrubs within the 121 acres of the park. - Caldwell Nature Preserve: 400 W. North Bend Road. Hidden in plain sight, discover 3 miles of hiking through old and newer growth trees. Most trails are mulched, some are paved and some are steep. - California Woods Nature Preserve: 5400 Kellogg Avenue. This 3.4 mile soil trail is a series of loops within a 113 acre preserve. Enjoy 53 species of trees. - Cincinnati Nature Center: Milford. There are 15 trails at Rowe Woods and Long Branch Farm & Trails. These 1,025 acres are privately managed. Parking is $8. - Devou Park: Park Hills Kentucky. You'll get a good workout from the very hilly terrain. The Bates-Coombs Loop is the longest trail at 2.5 miles. When done, head over to the Drees Pavilion for an extraordinary view of downtown Cincinnati and the Ohio River. - Fort Thomas Tree Trail: 130 N. Fort Thomas Ave. This is a 1 mile trail with nice variations in elevation and includes tree identification markers. - Highland Cemetery Hiking Trails: 2167 Dixie Highway. Six trails within 150 acres of undeveloped land featuring mature trees and waterfalls. Longest trail is 2.5 miles. - LaBoiteaux Woods Preserve: 5400 Lanius Lane, College Hill / Northside. This is one portion of the Northside Greenspace which includes Buttercup Valley Nature Preserve, Parker’s Woods, and Badgley Run Park. Features 2 miles of hiking. - Middle Creek Park: 5501 Middle Creek Rd. Burlington. There are 8.5 miles of trails through 230 Acres of pristine forest. Trails have shared use with horses. - Mt Airy Forest: 5083 Colerain Avenue. The 1,400 acres in Cincinnati's largest park provide the widest selection of hikes. Trail Ridge hike is a popular 3.4 mile loop. - Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum: 4521 Spring Grove Avenue. The 733 acre Spring Grove Cemetery is the second largest in the nation. A paved, 4.2 mile, figure 8 loop winds through many of the finest specimens of tress to be found anywhere. - Stanley M. Rowe Arboretum: 4600 Muchmore Road, Indian Hill. This is a spectacular little park for those who enjoy seeing and learning about trees and shrubs. Not a very long walk, but with over 5,000 plantings, one that is full of visual treats. - Withrow Nature Preserve: Five Mile Road, Anderson. Trout Lily Trail is a 2 mile, moderate difficulty rated trail with a view of the Ohio River. - Woodland Mound: 8250 Old Kellogg (Nordyke Road access also). A small entrance fee gets you multiple trails, some are paved, some with river views. -----RSIR |
