Every day, there are more homeowners who have awakened to the fact that our Bradford Pear trees, so beloved for their profusion of springtime flowers, come with a significant downside. - The Bradford Pear was developed as delightfully flowering ornamental tree. It made such a nice Springtime presentation that it became immensely popular. Cities lined entire streets with the tree. It had few threats from insects or disease and, perhaps most significantly, it was sterile. The tree was thought to have only two issues of concern; a weak limb structure and a short lifespan. Decades later, even limbs falling like leaves in the Fall proved to be a lesser concern that longer term environmental consequences. In an effort to strengthen this original Bradford Pear, other cultivars were developed, such as Cleveland, Redspire, Aristocrat, Chanticleer, and others. While the Bradford does not self reproduce, it cross-pollinates with these cultivars, producing seeds that are a delicacy for birds. - Seeds produced by the cultivar cross-pollination are spread far and wide by birds. In open fields, these seeds quickly develop into a nightmarish frankenstein forest of impenetrable thickets with trees bearing 4 inch long thorns like this --> Photo. These thickets choke out our native Pines, Dogwoods, Maples, Redbuds, Oaks, and Hickories. - Alternatives: Lovely Spring blossoming trees include: Redbuds, SilverBell, Dogwood, & Cherry. Sensational is a popular Redbud and seldom grows over 15' tall. The SilverBell is an early flowering tree that seldom grows above 25'. Dogwoods are also a Springtime treat. Being slow growers, dogwoods are sometimes dismissed. However, there is nothing quite so spectacular as a mature Dogwood in bloom. Cherry trees are also excellent, although they are a shorter lived tree. - An ideal Springtime flowering tree is the Crabapple. Many varieties of Crabapple now hold onto their berries, making them appropriate for around patios. The 'Snowdrift' variety is a particular favorite for birds. Some Crabapples to avoid include 'Bob White', 'Evelyn', and 'David' as these flower only in alternate years and produce an overabundance of fruit in their flowering cycle. Serviceberry and Magnolias are also beautiful Springtime blossoming trees.-----RSIR |
