Spring is knocking on our collective consciousness. For many, this fires the imagination about our gardens. You can bet that the local deer are thinking along the same lines, except they are salivating at the prospect of "open season" at 'all-you-can-eat' back yards. - There is no such thing as a deer resistant landscape. Arborvitae is often mentioned as being deer resistant, but it will make a nice winter-time snack if there is not enough forage on the menu. There are ways to discourage deer who want to use your yard to dine and dash. - Deer will rate your yard with 5 Stars if there are plenty of hostas, tulips, forsythia, crocuses, fruiting plants and trees. They especially love strawberries, cherries, geraniums, rhododendrons, yews, and of course, vegetables from your garden. - Left photo: Northern Bayberry. Right photo: Drooping Leucothoe. Both are also favorites for birds! - Establish a Perimeter! Deer are more likely to turn up their noses at heavily scented plants such as lavender, sage, rosemary, and mint. Some gardeners recommend positioning these plants like sentries around the perimeter of your yard. - Within the perimeter, install plants that have an ‘A’ rating in deer resistance. These include trees such as american holly and river birch. Shrubs include: arrowwood viburnum, bottlebrush buckeye, northern bayberry, boxwood, pieris japonica, and oregon grape holly. Perennials include: false indigo, bleeding heart, iris, and peony. Deer rarely touch ornimental grasses. - This Rutgers University Website assigns deer resistant plants with ratings from A to D. Happy gardening!-----RSIR |
