Let's look at some of the options for heating water in our homes. - Storage Tank This is the most common system and the system described as accounting for up to 30% of the average home energy budget. When looking at a storage tank water heater (gas or electric), consider looking for the EF (Energy Factor Rating). A higher EF will translate into energy savings. An EF rating close to 1 can save a family of four up to $95 per year. a standard storage-type tank water heater can be purchased and installed for between $600 and $1,000 and will typically service the entire home. Larger, higher energy saving storage tank water systems can also cost over $2,000. Note: Electric tank water heaters use more energy than gas systems. - Tankless Tankless Water Heating Systems use high-powered burners to 'instantly' heat water as it flows through a heat exchanger. This method is generally 22% more efficient than the much more common storage tank hot water system. Energy savings can be up to $70 or $85 per year or $6 to $7 per month. Many who own tankless water heaters mention that the monthly savings was not the highest driver in their decision to go tankless. Rather, they mention their environment considerations, such as saving energy. It should be noted that the purchase cost and installation for a tankless system can range from $1,800 to $3,700. Plus, a large family may require two tankless systems. - Solar While not common in this region, it is estimated there are 1.5 million solar water heaters in the US. In fact, Hawaii requires all new homes to have solar water heaters. - Heat Pump These systems don't generate heat directly, so they can be very efficient. - Hybrid This system combines an tankless system with a 40 gallon water tank. Rinnai is a system we see on occasion. - Geothermal This system exchanges heat from the earth rather than the air and is the most energy efficient system. The initial cost is significantly higher. ---RSIR |
