For decades, home owners have been riding undulating waves of relocation that ripple and radiate ever further from the city center. Having been deposited on distant reefs, many are left feeling high and dry. With commutes that often take two or more hours out of each day, some clients lament that they spend more time in the fishbowl of their car than they have time to spend with their family. For our younger clients, fresh from the college experience, living in distant suburbs is akin to treading water in the middle of an ocean. - In fact, a national poll of 3,000 adults in the fifty largest metro areas found that Millennials are distinguishing themselves as the generation that, more than any other, prefers to walk. The poll was jointly conducted by the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and researchers at the Portland State University. - Millenials, those aged between 18 and 34, prefer living in attached housing, living within walking distance of shops and restaurants, and having a short commute. They are the most likely age group to make use of public transportation. - The poll also found that millennials show a stronger preference than other generations for expanding public transportation and providing transportation alternatives to driving, such as biking and walking, while also increasing the availability of trains and buses. Millennials likewise favor developing communities where people do not need to drive long distances to work or shop. - The survey found that Americans generally prefer walkable communities more so than they have in the past. And while 60 percent of adults surveyed live in detached, single-family homes, 25 percent of those respondents said they would rather live in an attached home and have greater walkability. - The homes above represent homes with the highest 'walk-scores'. Left to right, they range from: 97, 85, 71, 68, 62, 60 - out of a possible 100. Click on each for more information. Some of our agents refer to WalkScore.com to help clients determine how ‘walkable’ a neighborhood is. This clever website asks for an address and, based on the nearness of restaurants, shops, bars, grocery, parks, and such, produces a 'walk score'. A higher number means you may more often leave your car at home. Want to find out your walk score? Go to WalkScore.com. ---RSIR |
