Tudor Architecture ---- The Many Local Examples of Tudor Architecture


As our agents gathered for their regular meeting to discuss their listings, one agent noted how many of our listings represented Tudor architecture. Our marketing team decided to reference this for our July issue.

What is Tudor Architecture?
Probably the most common identifying feature of Tudor architecture is the half-timbering present on the upper portion of the home. This mimics the infilled timber framing found in the Medieval era. In area homes, stucco is the typical infill.

The half-timbering feature of these Tudor homes is featured on front facing gables. These gables are very distinctive. Looking at the homes at right, you will see that every home has front facing gables with half-timbering. Another common feature is the lower portion of the home being clad in stone. (Less commonly seen is brick cladding.) This stonework gives the homes a very solid, timeless look and feel.

Other features include windows that are tall, narrow, often of the casement variety, and commonly in multiple groups with multi-pane glazing. Doorways were a favorite place for adding Renaissance detailing. Simple round-arch doorways with heavy board-and-batten doors are common. Finally, it is not uncommon to see chimneys be presented as a significant element of the design. The home at right on South Rookwood is an example.

This style was especially popular during the 1920's and 30's. Many of the homes at right were built during this period.

This is an exquisite example of Tudor architecture. It has the stone cladding, half-timbering, and leaded glass windows mentioned at left. It also features large, elaborate chimneys and Renaissance style entry doors. This home is listed at $1,899,000.
One Madison Lane, Hyde Park
This home diverges a bit towards English Cottage, but obviously It has the stone cladding, half-timbering, and leaded glass windows. It also features large, elaborate chimneys and entry doors. This home is listed at $699,900.
3555 Totten, Mt Lookout - (Pending)
Even modern builders today pull inspiration from traditional Tudor architecture. Note the stone cladding and half timbering effects on this newer home. This home is listed at $649,90000.
1047 Lenox Place, North Avondale
Inside, this gorgeous family home is the picture of elegance. Outside, it offers many touchstones of Tudor architecture such as stone cladding and half timbering. This spacious family home is located on an excellent street. $649,000.
6259 Orchard Lane, Kennedy Heights / Pleasant Ridge Pending
Perhaps this home and the home on Rookwood above are the closest to being 'high style' or traditional Tudor design. Updated for modern living, the home was completely renovated inside. Listed at: $439, 900.

Like the home on Totten shown above, the builder of this home extracted a few touchstones from Tudor to give the home added style. Listed at: $349,900.

3425 Berry Avenue Hyde Park
Even builders of multi-residence homes can be inspired by the romance of Tudor architecture. This property, constructed in 1929, was built as an elegant 4 family and has been remarkably renovated into four beautiful condominiums. Residence #4 is currently listed at $269,900.

In the strict sense, many area Tudor homes are vernacular- that is, they've been designed by builders, not architects. (See 3555 Totten and 6282 Orchard Lane above.) However, builders routinely add features from High Style architecture. ---RSIR
