From Wikipeida: "Bellevue was named for the plantation of Gen. James Taylor Jr., Quartermaster General of the Western US Army in the War of 1812. The City was once the eastern part of his plantation. The name Bellevue was taken from the General's family plantation in Virginia. Bellevue, or "belle vue", translates from French to mean "beautiful view.” James Taylor’ father bought 2,700 acres of land in the area from his friend George Muse. In 1848, the Taylor estate was valued at more than $4 million. Today, his home stands in the East Row local Historic District in the adjoining City of Newport. The Taylor Mansion is the oldest house in East Row." - In the early 1900’s, Bellevue was known for white sandy beaches on the banks of the Ohio River. In 1902 a resort called Queen City Beach extended from Washington Avenue to the Dayton city line. When it opened, it was considered one of the largest inland bathing resorts in the nation. Today, Bellevue Beach Park marks the location of where this resort once stood. The photo below shows the immensity of the Queen City Beach Resort; outlined below in yellow. Also seen is the expansive, white sandy beach. ![]() Bellevue rests on the banks of the Ohio River between Dayton in the west and Newport to the East. There are approximately 6,000 residents in the city. General Taylor named most of the streets in Bellevue. The streets Foote, Ward, Van Voast and O’Fallon were names belonging to the husbands of the General’s four daughters. - We believe Bellevue is in the midst of quite a renaissance. One obvious sign of this has been the upswing in residents renovating recently purchased homes. Examples can be found on streets such as Van Voast and Lake. Home buyers tout the convenience to downtown Cincinnati and the variety of restaurants within easy walking distance. These include: Mrs Teapots, Pasqualie’s, Siam Orchid, Bellevue Bistro, Elusive Cow, Twisted Sisters, and Virgils. Of special note; family owned and operated Schneider’s Sweet Shop, purveyors of ice cream and candy, has been in the same location since 1939. Bellevue is a thriving neighborhood that embraces its history.---RSIR |
