Fort Thomas has one of the more historically colorful timelines compared with most regional communities. For instance, this snippet from Wikipedia states: “On or around 1749, a large battle occurred between a band of Cherokee and victorious Miami and Shawnee. As many as 600 graves of slain warriors have been unearthed by archeologists. It is not uncommon to find arrowheads and other artifacts while gardening or hiking the woods and streambeds throughout the City.” - It was General Philip Sheridan who chose the this location for Fort Thomas. General Sheridan, employing a knack for marketing, dubbed the area ‘The Highlands' and predicted that this military complex would become the ‘West Point’ of the West. This post was named for General George Henry Thomas. - Fort Thomas never became the West Point of the West. However, it remained an integral cog in the Army’s system of military posts until the mid 60’s. Later, the City of Fort Thomas purchased a portion of the land for recreation facilities. This is why you see tennis courts, ballfields, picnic shelters, playgrounds, walking trails, basketball courts, and volleyball sand areas. This is also why Fort Thomas is such a family friendly community. - In the early 1900's, mineral waters were discovered. For a time, Fort Thomas rivaled French Lick as a health spa destination and featured three well appointed hotels to accommodate visitors. - Perhaps the most notable architectural icon of Fort Thomas is the Water Tower at the entrance of Tower Park. The Water Tower was built in 1890 and stands at 102 feet tall. Interestingly, it is still used as a water tower! ![]() We happen to have a remarkable home for sale in Fort Thomas. It is located at 25 Michelle Lane and includes lovely views of the Ohio River and beyond.
