The Village of Glendale is one of the most desirable and historic communities in the region. In fact, this is the only village in Ohio that has been designated a National Historic Landmark by the Department of the Interior. It has the same landmark stature as the Charleston Historic District and The Alamo Plaza Historic District. - The community has two additional historic benchmarks. It is the first planned railroad commuter town in the nation. Founders envisioned a true suburb that had train access to the industrial area of the Mill Creek Valley, to Cincinnati, as well as points North. - Glendale is also the first planned suburb to be laid out in deference to the existing topography rather than a grid. The result is a neighborhood with gently curving streets, many of which pass by parks or other greenspace. On the topic of parks, the exquisite Sharon Woods and Glenwood Gardens parks are just minutes away. - As you explore Glendale, you may notice four foot tall, fiberglass sculptures of squirrels scattered about. There are 25 in total and each squirrel is decorated in eye-catching attire. See each squirrel here. But why squirrels? - Those familiar with the black squirrels seen in Michigan may be surprised to see the same squirrels skittering about in Glendale. A local businessman brought two pairs from Harbor Springs in the 1940's. Curiously, one of the four was shot within two weeks, but all the black squirrels you see today are offspring from the remaining three. The black squirrel has come to be the symbol of Glendale. - The summer months bring an influx of visitors. They enjoy the free music provided through the Summer Concerts on the Green at the Harry Whiting Brown Community Center. The HWB sponsors a wide variety of cultural and artistic events. - The Rail Depot, located in the Village Square has a long association with the village. Today it is better known as where you can get a great meal with the rumble of the occasional passing train adding a note of ambiance to your meal. The Rail House closed in July, but a new restaurant is expected to open in its place in the coming months. - Active restaurants in Glendale include: The Grand Finale, Meritage, The Friendly Stop, Cock & Bull English Pub, Bluebird Bakery & Café.-------RSIR - If you're interested in living in this wonderful community, we happen to have a home for sale in Glendale. See the Morse Avenue home in our September Features at left. |
