Perhaps no Northern Kentucky community has seen a transformation quite like Newport. Looking at this lovely community today, one would never imagine that it was once known as ‘Sin City’ due to the many gambling casinos, prostitution, & strip clubs that were once located here. It is a testament to the strength of vision that community leaders recognized the true potential of this city’s position on the river. Newport has done a complete 180, and is now a family friendly environment with international attractions like the Newport Aquarium and the entertainment mecca; Newport on the Levee. This transformation has attracted upscale residential opportunities such as the SouthShore Condominiums. - It should be noted that we are the official representatives of The SouthShore Condominiums. If you have considered living in an upscale building with great views of the Ohio River and the Cincinnati skyline give Tim Hinde or Clint Copenhaver a call. Clint also has a truly charming Newport home for sale. See it here. - We were surprised to learn that the Newport name is not a reference to any local river docks or anchorage. In fact, this city was named after Christopher Newport, the commander of the first ship to reach Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. Newport experienced its largest population increases after the Roebling Bridge was completed in 1866. Double digit population increases were seen until a figure of 30,000 was reached. Newport’s population today is roughly half that number. - East Row Historic District One area of Newport that is definitely worth exploring is the East Row Historic District. Some of the area’s business owners and merchants selected East Row to build exquisite homes. You’ll find gorgeous examples of Victorian, Italianate, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival. Like many older neighborhoods, a gradual decline caused many of these homes to deteriorate when, as often happens, lower prices began attracting preservationist-minded citizens. These visionaries have rehabilitated many wonderful homes. Active participation in social & garden clubs keep this neighborhood knitted together in common purpose. All buildings in East Row are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. - Residents we talk with enjoy living in an environment with a smaller scale, river-town feel. This is a family friendly environment where everything you might want is within walking distance. There are over 90 restaurants in and around Newport. Some of these are located directly on the banks of the Ohio River, such as Chart House, Hofbrauhaus, Joe's Crab Shack, Buckhead Mountain Grill. Other popular restaurants include York Street Caf, Pompillios. - Music venues such as the Southgate House Revival & Thompson House attract a diverse selection of bands. And speaking of music, Newport on the Levee hosts the Summer Concert Series. This free musical happening occurs every Thursday from Spring to Fall and draws big crowds. If you want more, residents can simply walk across the Purple People Bridge to a Reds or Bengals game, or all the many things to do at The Banks. All in all, we concur, Newport has achieved a remarkable ascendency in a short period of time. -------RSIR |
