It’s not often that we get to market a Beaux Arts home as they tend to be somewhat rare in this area. Our listing at 1806 Madison Road in East Walnut Hills provides an excellent opportunity to discuss this architectural style.
- The Beaux Arts style of architecture was very popular among trained architects from about 1880 to 1920. We like this description in Wikipedia: "Beaux-Arts architecture depended on sculptural decoration along conservative modern lines, employing French and Italian Baroque and Rococo formulas combined with an impressionistic finish and realism". ![]() Here at the office, there was a debate as to whether this East Walnut Hills home was Beaux Arts or Second Empire architecture. As you know from a previous article in our eNews, Second Empire homes also feature a Mansard Roof. Three factors swayed our opinion towards Beaux Arts. --a) The date of construction, 1890, coincides with the early period of Beaux Arts. --b) The frieze below the dentil features swag or festoon of garlands in relief. --c) The twin pilasters framing the front door & window feature a neoclassical capital. - Beaux Arts was most commonly found in prosperous urban neighborhoods, which defines East Walnut Hills. Our Beaux Arts home has a bit less ornamentation than is often found. For instance, in the figure below, the Clifton Cultural Arts Center (right image) features a bit more ornamentation. The Laurel Court home is an internationally known Beaux Arts example. Interestingly, it has pilasters and capitals similar to our home on Madison.--- -RSIR
