- Several clients have asked us what happened to our articles on Cincinnati area architecture. Our last article on architecture was in the June 2011 e-News. So, we asked our agents to collaborate on another article. They chose to write about Dutch Colonial architecture, which seemed appropriate since we have an excellent example currently listed for sale. - Dutch Colonial is among the oldest architectural expressions in this nation. It's roots are traced to home building techniques in medieval Holland. As these emigres began arriving in the New York area, they applied the same home building techniques they used in Holland. The below left image shows a typical pre-1750 home of these settlers. The below right image shows the roofline adaptation (A) made by these intrepid people. By broadening the gambrel,* they added signficant usuable attic space. This design resulted in an steeper roofline, so a flaired eve (B) was added to sheet rainwater away from the home. These two features are the primary identifiers of today's Dutch Colonial. -
Quite often, architects or builders will add a side wing to these homes. Some contend this is a modern interpretation from observations of early Dutch homes which often had such a wing. Many Dutch homes built in the Albany, New York environs have these wings. These homes were constructed with such thick stone walls, when the original home became to small for a growing family, they would build a larger home next to the original. The original home (or wing) would be used as a kitchen, family room, or bedroom. - Other features historically associated with Dutch Colonial architecture include a chimney at the gambrel-end and Dutch doors. (Dutch doors are no longer common.) - We are proud to be the agent of record for an excellent example of Dutch Colonial architecture in beautiful Hyde Park. See it here.---- -RSIR - *A Gambrel is the triangular portion of a wall - the area between the edges of a sloping roof. |
