Steps taken now can help keep your home safe and in top shape. Winter will be here sooner than we may expect. Getting prepared and taking early action to protect your home will save you headaches later. Requesting service for your heating system or chimney now - before these service providers get booked up - means you can fit into your schedule, as opposed to having to fit into theirs. - Furnace It's important to have a professional inspect and service your home heating unit each year before it's turned on for the first time. The earlier you arrange for this service, the easier it will be to arrange a convenient appointment. A home's heating system is one area where an ounce of prevention is truly worth a pound of cure. - Water Heater Fall is a good time to remove the sediment at the base of the water heater tank. Collected sediment will greaty reduce the efficiency of the burner and can also damage the interior lining of the tank. Make sure there is plenty of clearance around both your furnace and your water heater. Of course, if you have an instant water heater, these safety and maintenance concerns are eliminated. - Ceiling Fans Now is a good time to switch the direction of blade rotation. on ceiling fans. Having the blades push air up towards the ceiling, where hot air normally rises, will drive it back down around the edges of the room providing more even heating. Fans upstairs help keep lower floors comfortable and evenly heated. Ceiling fans help combat sweating windows that some homes experience in the wintertime. - Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors "Change Your Clock - Change Your Battery" is a national fire safety campaign and a safety issue no home should ignore. No home fire alarm should have a battery older than one year. And you may now be aware, but detectors over 10 years old may not be activated by smoke - even if the unit sounds off when the test button is depressed. In addition, every home should have at least one carbon monoxide detector. - Fireplaces Cincinnati has many older homes, that means Cincinnati has many old fireplaces. Over time, chimney flues become lined with creosote, causing a fire hazard. Mortar joints in fireplaces also weaken over time. Have a thorough inspection by a qualified chimney sweep. Also, having a chimney cap will improve the operation of your chimney and prolong it's life. - Following up with these reminders will help to prevent any surprise failures in your home's mechanics this coming winter. --- -RSIR |
