Listening to MarketPlace Morning Report on WVXU a couple weeks back, we heard a story from the Associated Press about a jump in mortgage rates. Quoting from the story: “The average U.S. rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage rose this week after falling to new record lows in each of the past 13 weeks.”

“Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac says the rate on the 30-year loan jumped to 3.55 percent. That's up from 3.49 percent last week, which was the lowest since long-term mortgages began in the 1950s.”

For those who have a long view, these remarkably low interest rates translate to incredible savings. For instance, exactly 5 years ago, we were all pretty enthusiastic at 30 year mortgage rate of 6.58%.

If you purchased a $250,000 home in August 2005, your monthly mortgage payment would be $1,275, or $15,300 a year.
