New law uncorks spirits at distillery
by Andy Brownfield, Cincinnati Business Courier
New Riff Distilling_s copper still tower
New Riff Distillery features a 55-foot copper still tower.

A new state law means a Greater Cincinnati distillery no longer has its hands tied in what it can serve to visitors.

The new Kentucky law, which goes into effect in July, treats craft distilleries much like craft breweries or wineries, allowing them to serve alcoholic beverages to visitors on-site. Currently, distilleries are limited to serving two half-ounce samples.

Bellevue's New Riff Distilling already has plans to expand its offerings. "Right now we're limited to two samples, and we have more than two products,"... Read more.

Bars beef up their bourbon
selection as whiskey gains fans
by by David Flaherty, Grapes and Grains

A bourbon mash bubbles as it ferments at Willett Distillery.

Bourbon is gaining popularity thanks to the growing craft spirits category and the continuing cocktail movement, David Flaherty writes. Beverage managers at upscale bars and restaurants are adding more bourbon options and creating cocktails made with local and seasonal ingredients that encourage patrons to enjoy the dark spirit even in the summer.

Slave was behind Jack Daniel's recipe
but was whitewashed from history
by Nick Allen, The Telegraph
Jack Daniels historical photo.
A man believed to be the son of Nearis Green sits next to Jack Daniel in this photograph from the late 1800s.
The makers of Jack Daniel's, America's favourite whiskey, have admitted for the first time that a Tennessee slave was behind its legendary recipe.

For 150 years credit for teaching the young Jack Daniel how to distill had gone to the Rev. Dan Call, a Lutheran preacher in Tennessee.

But the company said it was not Call but his slave, a man called Nearis Green, who in fact provided the expertise, the New York Times reported. Read more.

Scalo owner, partners to open distillery
by Stephanie Guzman, Albuquerque Business First
A 2,000-square-foot distillery will open on Central Ave. NE, in Albuquerque, NM

Two years ago, nine friends were sitting around tasting whiskey when each of them expressed that they didn't particularly like anything already on the market, and thought they could come up with better concoctions themselves.

...In Albuquerque, there are only two local distilleries, Distillery 365 and Left Turn Distillery. The typical craft distillery only has a revenue of about $1 million, according to Fortune, but rising incomes is fueling demand for higher-end liquor. Read more.
