From beehive to bottle
Rogue Farms in Oregon has partnered with Mother Nature and 7,140,286 honeybees with the release of Honey Kolsch. Brewed with honey that is uncapped, extracted and filtered, Honey Kolsch is made with Rogue Farms barley, and hops grown in their fields.

Honey Kolsch is a toast to hardworking honeybees everywhere and a nod to growing the revolution in beekeeping.

In the past year, US beekeepers have lost 42% of their colonies. While beekeepers can make up for some of these losses by splitting their hives, there is still more that can be done. In addition to splitting their hives, Rogue Farms sends their honeybees to California during the winter to avoid the chilly and wet Oregon air.

When the bees return in early spring, they get nectar from the blossoms in the hazelnut trees, big leaf maples, daffodils and tulips. They then move on to wild berries and Rogue's growing crops of pumpkins, marionberries and jalapeos. Wildflowers are planted just for the honeybees so that they have a bonus round of pollen and nectar to produce honey.

The best spirit distilled in each
of the 50 states
by Jason Horn, Playboy

During last decade, craft distilleries have blown up. There are now hundreds across the country, and we've finally reached a tipping point: Every state in the Union now contains at least one legally licensed distillery, something that hadn't previously been the case since before Prohibition.

In honor of that milestone, here are the top bottlings distilled in each of the 50 states. There are lots of brands that merely source booze from elsewhere and slap their name on it, but for this list, I chose only spirits that are actually distilled in the state they claim to be from. Now go get wasted, from sea to shining sea. Read more.

Derby City Spirits to focus
  on craft distilling
by Bailey Bloosemore, The Courier-Journal

In a Phoenix Hill building, formerly known as dance club Flip Flop Jack's, the boat bar and disco balls have been removed and replaced with something a little more familiar to Kentuckians: stills.

But the shiny silver machines won't be working around the clock to make the state's signature spirit. Instead, in an area known for bourbon giants, these stills will buck the trend and produce a variety of craft products -- small batches of moonshine, vodka, gin and rum.

"In the bourbon headquarters of the world, we wanted to give somebody another option, to try something new, something tasty," said master distiller Harrison Hyden. Read more.

Small Scottish distillers show fighting spirit

by Kristy Dorsey, The Scotsman

Paul Miller at Eden Mill.

Small-scale Scottish distillers making everything from gin to rum and vodka are gearing up a renewed campaign for changes which they believe could see their sector take off with the same explosiveness of the craft beer movement.

Drinks industry veteran Paul Miller is leading the charge, and the extent of the devolution of powers in Scotland is key as he takes aim at easing the tax burden on small-batch producers.

"This is something that could be a really useful and exciting way of stimulating the economy," says Miller, the head of Fife's Eden Mill and a member of the Scottish Craft Distillers Association (SCDA). "It is perfectly within the government's gift to give that, whatever government is in power. In the case of alcohol duty, that is currently the UK Government."

Whiskey distilling back in Delaware after a century
by Michael Chesney, WBOC 16

For the first time in a century, you'll soon be able to get whiskey legally distilled in Delaware.

The Painted Stave in Smyrna made the small-batch spirit called "Ye Olde Barley Whiskey." It's based on a 1600s Irish recipe.

According to Painted Stave, the last time there's evidence of whiskey being made in the First State is 1915. That's five years before prohibition.

Painted Stave opened in 2013. Whiskey has been in the works since the beginning. More.

Tom's Town Distillery coming to Kansas City
by Austin Alonso, Kansas City Business Journal

A new distillery is heading to Missouri's Crossroads Arts District.

Tom's Town Distilling Co., a craft distillery, is expected to debut at 1701 Main Street in late 2015. Local entrepreneur Steven Revare said he and his business partner, David Epstein, are collaborating once again to open the new business. The pair have been considering opening a craft distillery for about a year, and the growing energy and craft brewing movement in the Crossroads helped push them to move ahead with Tom's Town.

Revare said the Tom's Town name is a nod to political boss Tom Pendergast, who ensured that the prohibition of alcohol was not enforced in Kansas City. The distillery will be close to 1908 Main Street, where "Boss Tom" ran municipal affairs until his downfall in the late 1930s. Read more.
