Amps made from whiskey barrels

by Michelle No, Supercompressor

Whiskey and rock 'n' roll have always gone well together. So well, in fact, that Fender and barrel-reworking company River Drive decided to fuse the two in the 80 Proof Blues Junior amplifiers.

Made entirely out of reclaimed whiskey barrel wood, each limited edition unit provides 15 watts of all-tube power. To go with the 80 proof whiskey-aged wood, amps are exquisitely accented with a leather handle and a brass control plate and knob. Only 100 will be made, selling for $1,900. Read more.

Farm distilling on Canada's Vancouver Island
A century and a half ago, the Saanich Peninsula was the breadbasket of Vancouver Island, supplying the boomtown of Fort Victoria and the Hudson's Bay Co. with everything from fresh milk to spring lambs to elderberry wine. Back then "food security" meant eating -- and drinking -- locally.  And there were stills in many local barns.

DeVine Spirits is reviving the tradition of farm distilling on Vancouver Island. DeVine has been an organic vineyard and winery for 7 years, so when they decided to license a distillery, it made sense to look close to home and see what they could turn into spirits. Their own wine grapes provided a base for their gin, to which they added wild-gathered juniper, lavender, spruce tips (photo above) and coriander.

In the works is a gin garden, where visitors can see the actual botanicals on which gin is based. Then there are apples, pears, plums, even figs and sunchokes. If it can be fermented, they can distill it!

Whiskey-drinking women get stereotyped
by Heather Greene, Eater Straight Up
In the whirlwind weeks immediately following the launch of my book last fall, my fancy publicist inundated me with a slew of email requests that most writers only dream about. I whooped and hollered over coffee after reading messages such as, "CBS This Morning wants to talk to you." Later, I'd hop into a cab, coiffed and pumped for a television appearance, ready to talk whiskey.

And then this would happen: "What does it mean to be a women in whiskey?" or, "What kinds of whiskey do women drink?" or the nebulous, "What can you tell us about women and whiskey?"

But I didn't write a book about women and whiskey. I wrote a book about whiskey. So by the tenth woman-and-whiskey-themed interview, I began feeling ornery: "What's it like to be a woman in whiskey?" Read more.

Five top Hudson Valley distilleries
by Hailey Eber, New York Post

Stacy Cohen and husband Monte Sachs  of Catskill Distlling Company.

Pretentiously swirling a glass of pinot noir in a sunlit tasting room, while staring out at rolling hills of vineyards, has long been a lovely way to spend a weekend, but why should vino have all the fun?

In the past decade, the Big Apple's craft-spirits scene has exploded, thanks to eased regulations and a growing thirst for small-batch booze.

There are now about 70 New York "farm distilleries" - where at least 75 percent of the raw materials come from within the state - up from less than a dozen a few years ago. Some of these distilleries even grow the grains and botanicals for their liquors to control everything that goes into the bottle, and many offer tours and charming tasting experiences. Read more.

Boston Harbor Distillery opens

by Marian White, BostInno

Good news, whiskey fans! The much-anticipated Boston Harbor Distillery opened its doors on June 11th at The Port on Boston Harbor, according to an official source. Housed in a pre-Civil War era building overlooking Boston Harbor, the new Distillery will serve as both a distilling facility and an event space, tasting room and shop, offering essential tools and accessories for at-home bartenders. The Boston Harbor Distillery will also cultivate a community through classes, literature and education.

As visitors enter the new 11,000-square-foot space, they'll be greeted by an expansive, authentic exposed brick and beam building with 40-foot ceilings. According to a release, the decor will include hand-hewn, old growth wood trusses and crisscrossing beams along ceiling. Read more.

Connecticut's newest distillery
by Anne M. Hamilton, CTNOW
For a generation that prefers locally sourced food -- strawberries from Glastonbury, say, or tomatoes from Simsbury, wine from Brookfield and craft beer from East Haddam -- it's only natural to seek out locally produced spirits.

Now locavores, as farm-to-table fans are known, need look no further than Bloomfield (CT) for their gin, vodka or rum.

Three friends are launching Waypoint Spirits, a craft distillery and tasting room offering locally made spirits. They plan to open July 1 and have already arranged with local restaurants to begin serving Labrador Noon vodka, Man Overboard Rum and Wintonbury Gin, all under the Waypoint label. Read more.

One year anniversary for
Smoky Quartz Distillery
by SquirrelFarts Drink Blog

Smoky Quartz Distillery in Seabrook, NH just celebrated its one-year anniversary. So naturally they threw a party, released their new bourbon, and invited me down for a visit. All of those things are great ideas. I had been meaning to visit Smoky Quartz for several months, ever since one of the founders, Frank Kurland Jr., emailed me back when the snows were piling higher and higher.

After winter rapidly changed to summer, he (thankfully) reminded me that I still hadn't been down, and sent along an invite for their first year anniversary party on Memorial Day weekend. The party also coincided with the release of their newest product, V5 bourbon, available only at the distillery (review coming soon). Read more.
