CONFERENCE SCHEDULE Highlights for ADI SPIRITS CONFERENCE & VENDOR EXPO in Denver this April!

We've got an action-packed four days in Denver, April 1-4, for ADI's Spirits Conference & Vendor Expo! Full schedule forthcoming - there will be panel discussions, technical presentations, seminars, spirits tastings, distillery tours, hands-on distilling classes, plus a media lounge and special events (register here).

Here are just a few Conference highlights:

Keynote Speaker,  Dan Garrison: "Never tell a Texan he can't do something," wrote Charles Cowdery in "Bourbon Straight." Dan Garrison loves bourbon. As Alison Miller writing in the Southwest in flight magazine SPIRIT puts it, Dan's goal was "to make a bourbon that would stand up to anything produced in Kentucky." This he has done, and along with it built a destination distillery in the Texas Hill Country second to none. In every way Garrison Brothers Distillery represents the heart and soul of the grain-to-glass ethos of Artisan Distilling.

Panel Discussions:

  • How To Work With Wholesalers-Part I, The Supplier-Wholesaler Relationship: Moderator, Craig Wolf, Exec. Dir. Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America (WSWA) with Danny Wirtz, (Wirtz Distributing).
  • How To Work With Wholesalers-Part II, The Wholesaler-Retailer Relationship: Moderator, Craig Wolf, Scott McKee, Republic National Distribution Co. (RNDC-FL).

  • Destination Distillery: Panel discussion on how to work with your state tourism, agri-tourism and local Convention & Visitors Bureaus to gather available resources to build and fund a destination distillery.

Technical Presentations:

This presentation will review the current chemical and sensory status of the experiment after 2 years of aging including a discussion of what we might expect in the future.
  • Mashing for Optimal Yield:  David Llodra, PHD (Briess Malt) shares recent innovations in malting techniques aimed at optimizing yield from fermentation.
  • Nosing for Unwanted Congeners:  Nancy Fraley shares expert sensory awareness skills in recognizing unwanted congeners in the process of cutting heads and tails, and in mash preparation.

For the last 26 years, Bump has worked closely with some of the best and brightest Brewers, Distillers, Vintners, Retailers, Wholesalers, Importers and Wall Street companies in the world. Special Event:

Truman Cox, Master Distiller at A. Smith Bowman Distillery, Passes Away

We were truly saddened to hear that Truman Cox, Master Distiller of A. Smith Bowman Distillery, passed away on Saturday, February 9, after a short illness. In 2004, he became Lead Chemist at Buffalo Trace Distillery, and in 2011, Master Distiller at A. Smith Bowman Distillery in Fredericksburg, VA. He leave behind wife Susan and daughter Emmy.

This morning, Buffalo Trace President/CEO, Mark Brown, sent out the following tribute:

"Truman's death at such a young age and an exciting time in his life is very sad.  He was a terrific, genuine person, full of energy and passion for the things he enjoyed most - his family and making great whiskey.  He had a wonderful sense of humor and larger than life personality that could light up any room with his presence and enthusiasm.  Having worked closely with him on his transition to A. Smith Bowman Distillery from Buffalo Trace Distillery I know well the dream and excitement we both shared for what could be.  I am sorry that we will not now see that dream realized in his own unique way, it was going to be fun and exciting.  True Master Distillers in our industry are very special people called upon to know their profession extraordinarily well and be able to communicate effectively with all types of audiences, we depend on them for so much.  The loss of any true Master Distiller is an especially sad event.  In the case of Truman, simply heartbreaking."

On Feb. 5th, NY Times published Robert Simonson's article on hops in spirits in craft distilling.

New Option for UK Distillers to Sell Direct to Consumer

Dominic Roskrow, Director of Craft Distillers' Alliance, in the UK, informed us this week about a new initiative benefiting small, independent UK whisky producers, allowing them to sell even a single bottle of whisky directly to British consumer and trade customers.

The project was launched by Glasgow-based Bondeau, a storage, logistics and distribution company, in association with Roskrow, providing an alternative route for the UK market, including extensive bonded warehouse space, full transport and distribution facilities, even a marketing, PR and events service for organizing tastings, launches, events. Roskrow explains that a key "win" of this launch is, "that the lion's share of the income generated from sales goes back to the distiller."
First Distillery License Since Prohibition Granted in NJ

New Jersey's Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) has granted the first distillery license in the state since Prohibition. Fairfield-based Jersey Artisan Distilling now plans to immediately begin producing a rum which is slated to hit the market in April, using "traditional techniques" going back to the production of dark rum during New Jersey's colonial period. The company also plans to produce seasonal rum offerings this summer using fruits sourced in the state, such as strawberries, cherries and blueberries, as well as Bourbon and whiskey offerings using New Jersey sweet corn to be released in 2015. New Jersey currently has 45 licensed wineries across the state, as well as 11 craft breweries and 14 brewpubs. [News per www.shankennewsdaily.com]
