Greetings!

It's the time of year we give thanks to the abundance that we have in our lives.  Where we focus on what is truly important and share our appreciation for the relationships that we value.  The devastation from Hurricane Sandy makes this reflection all the more poignant. We would like to thank you, our clients and our friends, for your support and the community that you have helped us create.

This quarter's newsletter is dedicated to a long time client who recently passed. His contribution to the world included a life long commitment to strengthening the leadership of non-profit organizations. He was a warrior in his life and in his career and will be missed.

We would like to thank Sam Hull, Northstar's founder, friend and client for his article that chronicles his journey in retirement "Life on the Other Side".  An amazing account of how he overcame physical and emotional challenges to begin living the life that he and his wife Joan have always dreamed about!  Read his story in the link below.

Recently, Kristina attended an inspirational workshop that we'd like to share with you. The presentation (and book) is titled "It's not about the hike."  The story is of two ordinary, middle aged women who started taking short walks together around their neighborhood which led them on an amazing journey neither of them expected.  They have climbed over 244 mountains together and have the distinction of having hiked all of the 67 4,000 ft mountains in New England.  The talk was so inspirational, we had to buy the book.  It truly isn't about the hike.  Their tale is about finding the courage to take risks, try something new and how they found themselves learning and growing while spending time together out in the beauty of nature.  It's also a story about overcoming adversity and achieving your dreams.  Their website is full of hike reports, inspirational stories and information about upcoming presentations.  We would encourage you to curl up on a cold winter's evening and enjoy this read!

Life on the Other Side

by Samuel P. Hull

When, during our regular client meeting a month ago, Robin asked me to write something for the newsletter about how Joan and I were doing in our retirement these days, I said "sure", confident I could whip something up. It's been tougher than I thought.

First, I've got to be honest. After completing the sale of my ownership in Northstar to Robin in April 2008, it was really tough for me to move over from my long-held seat on the "advisor" side of the table to the other side of being a client. So for about a year, I drove Robin and her team nuts with calls and requests to "take a look at this new idea I just had" or "how about this strategy"?

The Top Ten Money Excuses

a DFA article by Jim Parker, Vice President

Human beings have an astounding facility for self-deception when it comes to our own money.  We tend to rationalize our own fears.  So instead of just recognizing how we feel and reflecting on the thoughts that creates, we cut out the middle man and construct the facade of a logical-sounding argument over a vague feeling.

These arguments are often elaborate, short-term excuses that we use to justify behavior that runs counter to our own long-term interests.

U.S. May Soon Become World's Top Oil Producer

U.S. oil output is surging so fast that the United States could soon overtake Saudi Arabia as the world's biggest producer.

Driven by high prices and new drilling methods, U.S. production of crude and other liquid hydrocarbons is on track to rise 7 percent this year to an average of 10.9 million barrels per day.  This will be the fourth straight year of crude increases and the biggest single-year gain since 1951.
